Bannack is doubly significant. It was the site of the first territorial capitalof Montana and also the site of the first discovery of gold in that territory. The discovery of gold in this region resulted in a rush to the gold mining region by way of the Bozeman Trail and up the Missouri River which in turn had a marked effect upon the Indian relations of the Trans-Mississippi West.
