Français : En 1798, il s'engage comme canonnier dans l'artillerie, mais est très vite réformé pour des problèmes de santé. C'est l'occasion pour lui d'approfondir son goût pour le dessin : il fréquente alors l'atelier de David et celui de Regnault. Le recueil de dessins conservé au Conseil d'Etat montre un trait de crayon alerte et une technique éprouvée, tant dans les croquis sur le vif à la plume que dans des dessins plus élaborés, mêlant fusain, craie et lavis.
