"Baz Bahadur, Pathan ruler of Malwa, Central India, riding at night with his mistress, the Hindu courtesan Rupmati. Murshidabad, c.1760. 21.5 x 14 cm. Gouache on paper. India Office Library. A popular theme in later Indian painting was the romantic story of Baz Bahadur, whose mistress committed suicide when he himself fled on being defeated by a Mughal army in 1561."
