Summary

Description
English: During World War II, Manhattan Project officials received tens of thousands of pounds of silver on loan from the US Treasury to use as magnetic coils in the Calutrons at the Y-12 facility, which was part of its efforts to make enriched uranium for atomic bombs. After the war, the silver was eventually removed from the Calutrons, melted into ingots, and returned to the Treasury. The photograph shows these coils after their removal from the Calutrons, prior to being returned. The exact date of this photograph is not indicated in the source, but may date from when the final silver coils was returned in 1970.
