English: This is the left or Ascension tympanum, one of three tympana forming the Royal Portal of Chartres Cathedral. The central theme is Christ's ascension, but around the edges are the signs of the Zodiac and the "Labours of the Months", as also found in the Cathedrals of Vezelay and Autun. (See: Chauncey Wood, Chaucer and the Country of the Stars, Princeton, 1970. pp. 54-55.)
