Photograph four of nine dating from 6th November 1974, when 33 prisoners attempted to escape from HM Prison Maze through a tunnel which they had dug. IRA member Hugh Coney was shot dead by a sentry, 29 other prisoners were captured within a few yards of the prison, and the remaining three were back in custody within 24 hours.

This image is taken from an album from the Royal Ulster Constabulary archive collection which contains 16 images of this escape incident.
