English: Gabriel's Gate, a popular Allen Street restaurant, is part of the Tiffts Row. A group of seven nearly-identical two-story brick Italianate residences built in 1868, local lore attributes their design and construction to someone by the name of W. Tiffts (possibly local businessman Wrilson S. Tifft, though the historical record never firmly establishes such a connection). The homes did seem to be built as a speculative venture, as they were all offered for sale or rent immediately after their completion through the firm of Hastings & Otto. Nearby homes on College and Mariner Streets are also attributed to the elusive Tifft or Tiffts, and were also marketed through Hastings & Otto. Originally distinguishable only by the angle of their roofs, the buildings were accented soon after the turn of the century with entranceways and other details in the Georgian Revival style.
