Summary
[edit]Description | In 1964, the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) ran a public Subway Map Competition. One of the winners was R. Raleigh D'Adamo, whose design provided the basis for the NYCTA's adoption of colour-coding by route from 1967 onwards. The original map was destroyed by the NYCTA in the 1980s, but a small colour photograph of it was found fifty years on, in 2014. From that photograph, Reka Komoli has reconstructed the handdrawn map as a vector graphics file (2015). The image shown here is a low-resolution raster rendering of that map. Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | To support encyclopedic discussion of this work in this article. The illustration is specifically needed to support the following point(s): The map shown here is the first use of colour-coding by route in the New York City Subway Map, and was used by the NYCTA as the basis for their introduction of such colour-coding in 1967, a design concept that they have used ever since. |

Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The original map is a vector graphics file allowing very high quality poster prints. A 10 MB raster image was produced, which is still of print quality. The image file being uploaded here has been reduced to 2 MB. This is detailed enough for the viewer to see the unique colour scheme used in the map, but is not of a high enough quality to be used as a commercial print, and therefore does not undermine Ms Komoli's future marketing of the map. |
