Notes

Notes from Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008:
" . . . [A] disconsolate sense of time passing irrevocably . . . is established by the measured recession of the silent sails toward the sunset horizon, by the numberless pink and blue-gray bands of light and shadow that form the surface of the ocean, and by the pale pink-bellied clouds that hover almost regretfully above the horizon . . . .

"Beyond viewing Sailing off the Coast as a record of an unidentified shoreline (perhaps Newport), one should recognize that the mood of the painting is allied to the mood of the country after the Civil War."
