Empire Way is now Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Item 49651, Yesler-Atlantic Neighborhood Improvement Project Survey Photographs (Record Series 1627-04), Seattle Municipal Archives. Seattle Municipal Archives changed its URL scheme circa 2022; the older URLs beginning with "clerk" are deprecated, and will eventually fail. English: Pedestrians at Jackson St. and Empire Way (now Martin Luther King, Jr. Way), Seattle, Washington, 1961. "Enco" and "Humble" were two of the names used for what later became "Exxon" gas stations; at the time, the "Humble Oil Company" used "Enco" in areas where it was not allowed to use "Esso" (because "Esso" derived from "Standard Oil" and a different company -- in this case Chevron -- had the right the "Standard" name in that state. |
