English: Flowering shoot of Sunhangia yunnanensis (formerly Desmodium yunnanense, and here labelled as such) in London’s historic Chelsea Physic Garden. Shoot borne by a large, mature specimen of this attractive and unusual tree native to the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. With its silvery foliage and attractive magenta flowers, this Leguminous tree species deserves to be more widely cultivated in temperate gardens. It may, however be insufficiently hardy to survive as a free-standing tree in colder areas, where it would need to be planted against a South-facing wall or even kept under glass. The Chelsea Physic Garden is famous for its exceptionally mild microclimate - warmer even than ambient London - in which thrive plants that would not survive outdoors in the rest of the UK. This microclimate is comparable to the climate of the Scilly Isles and that of certain Gulf Stream-warmed gardens of western Scotland.
