Description
English: This is a sketch of a Suttee witnessed by Danish merchant and author Ludvig Verner Helms ca. 1848. It was published in his book "Pioneering in the Far East and Journeys to California in 1849 and to the White Sea in 1878" in 1882. Helms was living in Bali at the time working for the Danish merchant Mads Lange. The Suttee was for a Rajah of the Balinese state of Gianyar who died December 20th, 1847. The digital image was taken from a digitized copy of the book created by the Google Book Search program.
