DescriptionThe Caledonian Boar (Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, 2-12-2023).jpg
English: This is a detail of a decorative relief on a sarcophagus depicting the Hunt of the Caledonian Boar. The sarcophagus is located in the courtyard of the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. What follows is the museum inscription about the sarcophagus as a wholeː
"Attic sarcophagus decorated with a Caledonian boar's hunt scene, a most popular subject, which due to the fate of Meleager refers to the inevitability of human fate. At the centre of the scene, one of the hunters - he is probably Meleager - is ready to kill the boar. On the left, Atalante is depicted as an archer. The other sides are decorated with griffins, with goats and sphinxes. From Nea Ionia. End of the 2nd century A.D. Inv. no. 3484. Archaeological Museum of Piraeus."
