Summary

Description
English: Using traditional multiplication and division techniques requires that some of the rods of the abacus temporarily hold values as high as 19, which would require the presence of three beads on top. With only two upper beads, the third can be simulated or coded using the "suspended bead". The image shows values from 8 on the left to 20 on the right. Note the use of the suspended bead on the five rightmost rods.
