DescriptionVirginia City, NV rephoto early 1870s + 2007.jpg
This was taken from "A" street but I think the original was taken a little lower down, perhaps from someones porch or window. The church looks different but there is another behind the church that looks more similar. Look at the larger size for more detail in the old photo. There are people milling about, several wagons, an oddly shaped building under the "Sierra Valley Lumber" sign and a stairway without a railing on the "Planing Mill Wood Turning" building. Raw lumber was brought in and "planed" to a smooth surface. A noisy operation for a downtown.
The church at left is St. Mary in the Mountains Catholic church. It was rebuilt in 1875 after a big fire burned down 90% of Virginia City. So bottom photo is pre-1875.
