Jane Parker is a New Zealand employment relations academic. She was a full professor at Massey University from 2013, before joining the European Trade Union Institute as a senior researcher. Parker is a co-editor in chief of the journal Labour and Industry: A journal of the Social and Economic Relations of Work.

Education

[edit]

After completing a BA/BCom and Masters at the University of Auckland, Parker wrote a 2000 PhD thesis titled Women's equality in British unions: the roles and impacts of women's group organising at the University of Warwick.[1][2]

Academic career

[edit]

While teaching and researching at Warwick Business School, Parker was part of the peer review group for the European Industrial Relations Dictionary, published by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound).[3] She returned to New Zealand in 2008 to work firstly at Auckland University of Technology and after that at Massey University, where she rose to full professor in 2013.[2][4] She later moved to become a senior researcher at the European Trade Union Institute, retaining an adjunct position at Massey.[5] She has undertaken work for the Economic and Social Research Council.[6]

Parker has also worked with the International Labour Organization (ILO), Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and the New Zealand Living Wage movement.[7][5] Parker was funded by the ILO to investigate employment policy in Papua New Guinea.[8][9] Parker was part of a collaborative Marsden grant with researchers at the Auckland University of Technology that used a national survey, interviews and case studies to investigate the costs and benefits of the living wage.[10] The research findings were presented to the International Labour Organisation, and influenced one city council to pay a living wage to all employees and contractors.[10]

Parker is co-editor in chief of Labour and Industry: A journal of the Social and Economic Relations of Work; editorial board member of Human Relations; editorial advisory board member of Employee Relations; and the co-director of the Massey University People, Organisation, Work and Employment Research (MPOWER) Group.[2][11] She is also an Associate Fellow of the Industrial Relations Research Unit at the University of Warwick (UK). In June 2021, she was elected at the International Labour and Employment Relations Association (ILERA) World Congress as a member of the ILERA Executive Committee.[7][12][5] Parker is also an executive committee member of the Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australia and New Zealand (AIRAANZ).[5]

Parker won the HRNZ Researcher of the Year award in 2017, and was part of the team that won the HRNZ Research Team of the Year award in 2019.[13][14] She also was awarded the best labour and industry paper award in 2010 by AIRAANZ, alongside Jim Arrowsmith.[15]
