Lemonade Mouth is a young adult novel by Mark Peter Hughes, published in 2007 by Delacorte Press.[1][2] It is set at Opequonsett High School in Rhode Island and follows five teenagers who meet in detention and ultimately form a band to overcome the struggles of high school. The novel was adapted into a film and premiered on Disney Channel on April 15, 2011.[3]

Plot

The story follows five Opequonsett High School freshman who seem to have nothing in common at first, but then realize that they could make all the difference when they learn to lean on each other and they form the most influential band in history, Lemonade Mouth. With the story told through each of the five band members, their friends, fans and some of their enemies too, it's complied by OHS "scene queen" Naomi Fishmeier. The story is supposed to teach you how bullying and being left outcast hurts. It also shows some good ways to forgive people for their mistakes, how to question authority in an apporpiret manner and how much control parents should have over thir children. It is compaired to eighties film The Breakfast Club.

Characters

Band members

Olivia Whitehead

Olivia is a shy, emotionless, isolated girl who leads the front vocals for the band. Olivia struggles with her life after her mother abandoned her when she was just a baby, her father was convinced of armed robbery and manslaughter when she was eight, and she was left to live with her grandmother. A bookworm, Olivia is often nervous and is reluctant to sing in a band because she lacks confidence before the band forms. Ever since a little girl, Olivia never thought she had a pretty voice, because her's is low, thin and scratchy just like her dad's. She is described as being over-weight with flat, shapeless, greasy hair and solemn brown eyes, which grow into a light yellow color whenever she is happy, which the band rarely sees. Besides her singing ability, Olivia plays the accordion and writes songs for the band about her personal struggles and how she had learned to over-come them with all the help, love and support that her friends give her. Stella's favorite is "Skinny Nancy" which which was written after Olivia's oldest of her thirteen cats Nancy, who later dies. Olivia is nick-named the "insane asylum" by Ray Beech. She is very vulnerable to Ray Beech's endless insults. When Olivia gets panic attacks she either throws-up or starts taking short rapid breaths. Olivia often seems to need reassurance from her band mates because she has trust issues. Olivia was born a Virgo after mother and father met at a high school party. Before going to Opequonsett High, Olivia went to St. Micheal's in Pawtucket, an alternative school where they send kids that don't fit in some place else so they could get an education "without walls." But Olivia becomes back among the walls for the first time in her life when her grandmother told her the past July that they could not afford the tutution anymore. She has a crush on Wen but won't admit it. Olivia's father, Ted Whitehead, named her after a character from William Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night. Throughout the book, Olivia carries a Scooby-Doo backpack. Even though considered shy, untalkitive and nervous, Olivia is symphathetic, sweet, gentle, soft-spoken, talented, smart, considerate, honest, caring and liked by everybody in the band.

Wendel "Wen" Gifford

Wen is a laid-back, cool, funny guy, Wen is struggling with the fact his father will be marrying a much younger woman, Sydney. He feels she wants to take the role of his mom and he lusts after her. Wen plays the trumpet for the band. He is nick-named "Woody the Horn Dog" by Ray Beech. He's described as having blond hair that falls to his eyes and black rectangular-framed glasses. He lost his two best friends Azra Quimby and Floey Packer the past year because he asked Azra out and everything got uncomfortable between them. He later moves on and starts having some curiosity for Olivia and her shy nature. He later on discovers he has a strong love for Olivia and thinks of her more than just his best friend. He and Olivia are into the same things, like the same music, and are P.G. Wodehouse fanatics. Wen seems to be the only one in the band that has controle over Olivia and has a way of calming her down, such as when the band goes up to New Hampshire to visit Olivia's father in prison, she starts to get stressed and nervous about the situation and Wen is the one who calms her down. He's usually the joker and tries to laugh things off when the band gets into tough situations.

Stella Penn

Stella is a loud, hyper firecracker born in Arizona who is reluctant to move to a small town half-way across the country because of her mother's new job. She goes to detention to rebel against her neglectfull parents. She is described as "really tall." Early on in the book, Stella chops all of her hair off in a fit of rage and later dyes it green. It is mentioned at the end of the book that she has dyslexia. Stella has been a vegetarian since the eighth grade. At school, Stella swaps her electric guitar for an electric ukulele. Stella was first to believe in making the band, and was the creator of the band's name when she spits her lemonade in Ray Beech's face. Stella has a lot of self-confidence and curage, which are two things that Olivia lacks, therefor, making her the perfect friend for her. She encourages Olivia and the two start bonding in the middle of the book. Stella seems to be the leader of the band, although she often asks them for advice. Even though portrayed as rebelious and a little nuts, Stella is shown to be a hard-worker and caring to her friends, especially Olivia, who is hinted to be her favorite and she's shown to be protective of her lead singer. Stella can't stand it if Olivia gets hurt or bullied and feels guilty if she pressurs Olivia into doing anything that will make her nervous. She's usually the toughest member of the band.

Mohini "Mo" Banerjee

Mo is a gentle-natured, soft-hearted, intelegent good girl who finds herself socially inept and under the thumb of her strict father. She lies to her family while dating Scott Pickett. She plays stand-up bass for the band. She is from Calcutta. She is said to be skinny and having long, straight black hair, brown eyes and brown skin. Mo is cursed with being the only Indian girl at school. Mo eventually grows into having romantic feelings for her heartthrob drummer and best friend Charlie, but at the end, they kiss under an umbrella in a heavy downpour of rain. Mo has a lot of nerve to speak her mind and express her opinions despite the fact that she is the smallest in the group. When Mo gets nervous, she bites her nails and gets stress headakes.

Charlie Hirsh

Since his recent birthday, Charlie finds himself struggling with a big twist of fate that allowed him to be alive instead of his still-born twin brother Aaron. He has a monster crush on Mo and is worse in the world at making decisions, so he tosses a coin. Charlie plays the congas, bongos and timbales for the band. He has a gentle and shy nature that doesn't help too much when you're about to get beaten up, but he definitely doesn't take abuse and is more than willing to stick up for himself and for his friends. He is said to be a heavy-set with an "overgrown mop of frizz" for hair. Despite all these things that make him a sweet person, Charlie is misunderstood by his peers. After his first performance at the Halloween Bash, a bunch of girls starts to talk to him and therefor making him Opequonsett High's new heartthrob. He is nick-named "Buffalo Boy" by Ray Beech. Like Wen does with Olivia, Charlie has ways of calming Mo down whenever she is stressed out or worried, like when Mo broke up with Scott Pickett after she cought him kissing his ex-girlfriend and Charlie comforts her.
