List of Waterloo Road episodes

The following is a list of episodes for the British BBC television drama, Waterloo Road. The series began with its first series on 9 March 2006 and ran for a total of eight episodes. In 2007 a second series of a further 12 episodes was broadcast. Popular with viewers, a 3rd series was commissioned not long after. The longest yet, the 20 part series began on BBC One on Thursday 11 October 2007 but on BBC One Scotland on Sunday 7 October 2007 at 8:00pm. A fourth series of another 20 episodes was commissioned in December 2007 and began airing on Wednesday 7 January 2009. In March 2009, a 20-part fifth series was commissioned. The recent commission will bring the total number of episodes to 80.

Series 1 (2006)

Acting headmaster Jack Rimmer hires Oxbridge graduate Andrew Treneman, hoping he can improve their failing status and bring them back from the bottom of the league tables. Colleagues Tom and Lorna tie the knot - but the groom ends up kissing someone who isn't his new wife. While Izzie is at the wedding, her daughter Chlo goes for a ride with her boyfriend Donte in his father's limousine with two other friends, but the limousine crashes into a lorry.

The aftermath of the crash, which killed pupil Adam Deardon and left Holly Tattersall in a coma, affects the whole school. Donte is faced with hostility from vigilante pupils, and when the police come to charge him in connection with the crash, he is found tied up in a cupboard with school bully Hadleigh Flynn threatening him with a knife. Tom and Lorna's marriage grows cold with news of her pregnancy, while things heat up between Steph and Jack, and Izzie is caught up in a feud with her former husband Jimmy, having banned him from seeing his daughters as she blames him for leaving the girls on the night that Chlo was involved in the crash.

Pupil Zoe Ramsden gives birth to a baby girl in class, and has claimed that the baby's father is headmaster Jack Rimmer. However, she eventually admits that the baby's real father, Craig Harris, has blackmailed her into telling this lie and asking Jack for £10,000. Lorna terminates her pregnancy behind Tom's back against Izzie's advice. Andrew implements a house system with disastrous consequences, including bribery schemes in which the less able pupils bribe their more intelligent counterparts to do coursework for them.

Izzie's ex-husband Jimmy causes a sauceage fest at the school when he demands access to their children, and Tom confronts Lorna about her miscarriage. Meanwhile, the pupils set up a homework club to gain more points in Andrew's new house system, but it isn't long before their devious plot is uncovered. Jack wonders about the sudden improvement in the grades gained by Steph's French class.

Lorna tries out a sexy new image in a bid to catch Tom's attention, while Head of English Grantly Budgen suspects that pupil Zak Walker may be taking drugs, and approaches Andrew for help. When Andrew and Kim visit Zak's home, it turns out that Zak is caring for his mother who has Huntington's Disease. Chlo takes drastic action to convince everyone she was driving on the night of the crash, and Steph stages a break-in to get rid of the suspicious coursework and avoid losing her job.

An education inspector pays a visit and brings bad news regarding the school's future. Jack decides the time has come to sack Steph, but his task doesn't quite go to plan when she threatens dire reprisals unless he rethinks his actions. Meanwhile, Tom and Izzie struggle to fight their feelings for each other and things come to a head when they find themselves alone.

The staff organise an open day in a bid to impress the inspectors, but events take a turn for the worse when gay pupil Rory starts a petition against homophobic bullying and he is headbutted by Lewis Seddon, who had bullied him earlier in the day. When placed in the "cooler", Lewis is suggestive towards Kim Campbell and when Jack Rimmer finds out, he goes ballistic and tells Lewis that he is expelled. Holly wakes from her coma, and Chlo rushes to her bedside in the hope of finding out what she remembers from the crash. Andrew asks Jack why Steph hasn't been sacked, while Lorna catches Tom and Izzie together.

Tensions run high as the inspectors make their decision about the future of the school, while Chlo's nerves are in pieces as she faces her day in court. Kim speaks to the committee about the terrible incident with Lewis, but they are less than sympathetic to her cause and she contemplates quitting her career - much to Andrew's dismay. Lewis's expulsion was reduced to a 15-day suspension, but his mother soon withdraws him from the school for good as the family had received hate mail from other pupils and parents. When Jack is preparing to join his colleagues for a drink to toast the school's survival, Lewis Seddon creeps upon him in his office and knocks him unconscious with a fire extinguisher. Lewis douses Jack in petrol and threatens to set him on fire, but Steph appears and saves Jack by spraying the contens of another fire extinguisher over Lewis. Lorna remains heartbroken over Tom and Izzie, and as the episode draws to a close, she is seen standing on the edge of a canal.

As the new term begins, Jack is excited at the idea of a new sixth form for the school but begins to think differently when Robert Aspinall begins to take charge and questions Jack's position as headmaster. Meanwhile, Roger's son Brett is in the same sixth form class as Mika Grainger and Mika's best friend Leigh-Ann Galloway. He invites the girls to his house for a small party, but Leigh-Ann spikes Mika's drink and pulls her top down, taking a photo.

Andrew and Kim come to blows over Robert Aspinall's proposal for the school. Leigh-Ann blackmails Mika by ordering her to leave the school or have her topless picture put on a website, while Brett avoids telling Jack the truth when Mika is falsely accused of wanting to get him into bed.

Mika's world comes crashing down around her when she finds herself the victim of an internet hate campaign and Steph decides to take matters into her own hands without telling Izzie. Leigh-Ann's lies are exposed and she is expelled, while Mika attempts suicide, only to be stopped just in time by Tom and Izzie.

Jack and Roger come to physical blows over the future of the school while Brett learns some hard hitting home truths about his father. Steph is the victim of a mugging by Maxine Barlow, a former pupil who is Lewis Seddon's girlfriend and had left the school after being thrown out of the family home for drug addiction.

The school goes on high alert when a female pupil is assaulted by a serial attacker. Tom finds himself in an uncomfortable situation when an obsessed pupil reveals she has a crush on him. As Izzie helps Lorna get settled into her new flat, tragedy strikes and Izzie is rushed into hospital, but her unborn baby does not survive.

Tom warns his obsessed pupil to stay away after his job is put on the line. Izzie tries desperately to pull her life back together but when it is revealed that Stacey got into bed with Tom, she does not hesitate to chuck him out. Stacey is assaulted on her way home from school and Lewis Seddon is quickly arrested, as he came face to face with her as she fled the scene of the attack, but Maxine Barlow finds the attacker's balaclava among her stepfather Kevin's possessions (Kevin is a kitchen worker at the school) and he is arrested just as the police are charging Lewis with the assault of Stacey.

Andrew becomes suspicious of trainee teacher Russell Millen who has behaving suspiciously, and after witnessing him committing an assault on a violent pupil, Russell admits that he is an alcoholic.

Steph decides to let Maxine stay after realising that she was not responsible for a theft she was accused of while on work experience. The school continues its plans for the new sixth form and Davina is put under pressure when details of her relationship with Brett surface.

Dale Baxter, a persistent truant, is placed in a children's home after his non-attendance at school results in his mother being arrested. Dale returns to school and the real reason for his truancy is revealed - he is suffering from overactive bladder syndrome, and is continually wetting himself. The condition is confirmed after he is assessed by a doctor, and he is allowed to return to the family home. Robert Aspinall plunges Jack's future with the school in jeopardy when he decides that a new head teacher would be more appropriate. The job is offered to Lyndsay Woodham, but she rejects it after witnessing Dale Baxter's outburst at Jack, who keeps his job.

Lorna tries to rekindle Tom and Izzie's relationship, and succeeds in doing so, but then takes her own life after deciding that she cannot live with multiple sclerosis.

Davina's relationship with Brett is exposed and a burger van (run by Lewis Seddon and two of his relatives) begins to sell junk food to the children through the school gates, just as the school begins to promote a healthy eating campaign. Tom and Izzie struggle with Lorna's death and Andrew gets offered a job in Rwanda. Meanwhile, pupil Siobhan Geary is taken to hospital after taking a substance that was given to her by Jed Seddon.

The burger van continues to sell fatty foods outside the school gates, despite Siobhan lying in hospital due to a drug overdose. Jack takes a dislike to the creationism that the school's latest sponsor governor Jerry Preston is trying to promote, and tells both Preston and Roger Aspinall to take their money elsewhere. Lewis Seddon comes forward to inform Jack that his aunt and cousin are dealing drugs, and Gem is promptly arrested, but Jed is nowhere to be found and that evening returns to Waterloo Road for revenge on Jack, but during their argument he brandishes a knife, only for Izzie to run straight into the confrontation and get stabbed.

As the gates open for a new term at Waterloo Road the school is firmly in the spotlight following the murder of drama teacher, Izzie Redpath. Although Jack has won a national bravery award, he secretly blames himself for Izzie's death. Meanwhile, Tom is still reeling from the loss of Izzie and blames Jack for playing the hero that night. He is now bringing up the teenage Chlo and Mika by himself, and so soon after his fiancee's death he is plunged into another family crisis when he finds out Chlo and Donte have secretly taken off to get married, but fails to stop the wedding from going ahead. However, he agrees to stay at the family home after a tearful plea from Chlo.

Jack and Eddie are put to a test when new boy Paul Langley tries to stab his abusive uncle with a knife, after Bolton Smilie told them that Paul was being abused and was in their "fight club" to boost his strength. Meanwhile, Matt has started the auditions for the musical and Tom asks Steph to tutor Chlo in French but Brett tutors her instead and they soon get too close for comfort.

The school, is under the grill as Maxine and Janeece are revealed to have scammed the whole Waterloo neighbourhood out of hundreds of pounds. Donte and Chlo take a big step in their relationship, but Chlo now has strong feelings for Brett. Other relationships are at stake as Jack and Steph get cosy.

Steph is still loved up from her and Jack's passionate night while a pupil Ben falls and cuts himself and Matt treats him and Ben is HIV positive and Matt has to go to hospital to prevent infection. Chlo and Brett sleep together for a second time, only for Donte to catch them in bed together.

The effects of Chlo's error of judgement ripple throughout the school. Pressure mounts on Jack, both professionally and personally, and Matt is forced to offer the lead role in the musical to Aleesha.

Rachel and Matt take four of the boys on a day trip to prison, attempting to deter them from a life of crime. Meanwhile everyone at the rest of the school is doing mock exams and Eddie challenges the staff to sit through one themselves. Back at the "prison", Rachel soon reveals to the pupils that it wasn't a real prison, and that they were being taken there as a shock tactic to try and keep them out of trouble. The "prisoners" even behaved in a violent manner.

Rachel is forced to compromise her integrity in order to stop the secrets of her past being revealed by a blackmailer. Janeece finds her work placement sparks a surprise new career interest, and Mika is in for a shock when she walks in on Tom and Davina in bed.

When Jasmine intervenes in an altercation between bully Michaela and a younger pupil, she has no idea the day will end in her suspension following assault allegations against her. Matt panics when his mother, Susan, announces she is arriving at his flat, and hurriedly removes all traces of Colin. Eddie, meanwhile, wants Jasmine to fight Michaela's bullying allegations, but she can't face the Governors' meeting later that night. At school, Tom and Grantly find all the light bulbs have been removed. Wannabe eco-terrorists Mika and Brett confess to taking them, and want their plans to make the school green taken seriously. Elsewhere, some of the sixth formers are on work experience at Colin's company. Matt tells Colin he wants him to move out for a few days, and is overheard by Maxine, who sends a text message back to school. The kids are all fired up, and Chlo has caught the eye of entrepreneur Dikran. Colin tells them they shouldn't let other people stop them going for what they want – a point not lost on Matt. Their relationship is over. Back at school, Matt has been "outed" and some anti-gay graffiti is discovered in the toilets. Dominic is caught red-handed, but he tells Matt why he wrote the graffiti. Humbled by Dominic, Matt decides to face up to his mother. Elsewhere, Eddie gathers some ammunition for the Governors' meeting and, when evidence of Michaela's bullying is shown, Jasmine is cleared. Stuart Hordley, meanwhile, gives Rachel an envelope of newspaper cuttings from her past. At home, Matt is devastated his mother knows he is gay but can't face reality. Eddie later comes across the envelope Stuart handed to Rachel while rummaging in the office and, looking inside, he gets the biggest shock of his life.

It's the last day at Waterloo Road for supply teacher Wilson Bingham. Tom is not happy to see him go, because he's a great teacher. Grantly's unhappy, meanwhile, when he's asked to supervise the bad boys alongside Aleesha and Danielle as they cater for the Governors' AGM lunch. Janeece has fallen for Wilson big time – and it appears that he feels the same about her. Wilson tells Janeece he's booked a hotel room in Manchester, but Steph overhears something. Knowing Steph's on to him, Wilson texts Janeece: it's time for them to be alone together. In the kitchens, things are going with a bang. Grantly's had enough, but when he learns of a free, slap-up meal, he's determined to pull off the AGM lunch. Elsewhere, Eddie has found out about Rachel's past. She admits the truth, and the blackmail, but property developer Hordley's bid was still the best. Eddie feels he has no choice – either she reports Hordley, or he resigns. Wilson and Janeece disappear and, when the teachers find out Wilson is an imposter, the police are called. Then Donte drops a bombshell on Chlo – he wants a divorce. In Manchester, Janeece can't believe the classy hotel Wilson has booked. She's over the moon, but Wilson gets what he wants and leaves her. Alerted by Janeece's call, Steph, Tom and the police race to the hotel. Janeece tells the police she saw a sticker for a caravan park in Wilson's car. No-one is home when they get there but, when Steph realises the kettle is still warm, Tom knows that Wilson can't be too far away.

Mika takes her eco-warrior plans to another level, with Brett, on the building site of the new Training Centre. Oblivious, headmistress Rachel counters Eddie's plans to resign by winding him up. His mood later worsens when Steph shows him a bounced cheque from Hordley. Rachel leaves Tom to deal with Mika, and says if he doesn't get through to her she faces exclusion. Leon, Mika's internet eco-guru, pitches up and they climb the threatened trees. Tom's incensed but Mika tells him to get lost, and Leon and his cronies smash the classroom windows. Elsewhere, Chlo admits she wants Donte back. Maxine's advice is to make him jealous, and Chlo looks hot when she goes on a lunch date with Dikran. Donte can't keep his eyes off her. At lunch, Chlo's inspired by Dikran to set up her own hairdressing salon. When he fails to get through to Mika, Tom storms off and bumps into Davina but is annoyed by her flippancy. Davina has a bad feeling about her relationship with Tom. Eddie, meanwhile, takes a hard line with the pupils, but Mika won't give up the fight – it's now personal and she sees Tom as enemy number one. She lashes out when Tom tries to climb the tree, and he falls to the ground. Hysterical, Mika tells Tom she's sorry. Tom tells both girls he doesn't want to stop them doing what they care about and he's going to be spending more time with them – consequently freezing Davina out. Rachel asks Eddie to stay, but he can't get over the blackmail. Rachel's in turmoil and calls the council. Eddie can't hide his relief, but is she being honest with him?

Sameen breaks into the school at dawn, changing from her pyjamas into a football kit. Meanwhile, Eddie is furious – Rachel hasn't called the council regarding crooked Stuart Hordley. She's not prepared to destroy everything she's worked for. On the football field, Sameen throws a strop. A worried Tom speaks to Rachel, and Sameen is sent to the cooler when she refuses to explain herself. Elsewhere, Chlo is advertising her hairdressing venture. When Tom finds out she's missed an essay, he's furious. Maxine has a plan, however – they'll copy essays off a website. Tom is taken aback by Davina, who knew about Chlo's hairdressing but didn't tell him. Immigration officials arrive and it transpires that Sameen's family is to be deported; Sameen has run away. Rachel lies and the officials leave. In the cooler, Rachel tells a petrified Sameen they'll fight for her. Elsewhere, Eddie warns Hordley off both the contract and Rachel. He later discovers that Bolton Smilie has been working illegally for Hordley. Eddie persuades Rachel to lure Hordley to the school. The immigration officers return. Sameen, Aleesha and Danielle barricade themselves inside the changing rooms. Eddie squeezes through the barricades; Sameen needs to be clear about the choices she has to make. She's confused – she'd have no prospects in Iran but can't enjoy her life when she doesn't know what's happening to her family. Tom and Davina, meanwhile, can't resolve their problems – she'll always feels like an outsider. They know it's over. Later, Hordley pitches up at Rachel's office and Eddie shows him the evidence on the illegal child labour. Hordley taunts Rachel, and Eddie loses it. Eddie thinks that's the last they'll see of Hordley, but Rachel's not convinced.

Steph's devastated when her language lab funding falls through and goes into full seduction mode to win the money back. Meanwhile, Jack's return means Davina faces a life-changing decision when she has to choose between two men, whilst Chlo, Brett and Mika try to get Tom and Davina back together.

Steph finds herself inundated with gifts, and it’s clear she’s going to have to let Security Dave down gently, but how…?

Matt has applied to be an emergency foster carer but may be biting off more than he can chew with his first ward – Sambuca Kelly. Meanwhile, Donte has organized an underground boxing match between Bolton and another pupil from a rival school. With Donte’s debts spiraling out of control, the boxing match is a quick win to earn some cash, but can he continue to keep the teachers in blissful ignorance?

Meanwhile, a loved-up Eddie must keep his mind on the job, but his day gets hijacked by an argument between Danielle and her father. What starts off as a debate about home-schooling versus state education soon escalates into a domestic dispute.

Earl’s doing his best to convince Maxine that they should have a baby. He wants them to finally have what they never got from their own childhoods; a proper family, a home and stability. This horrifies Steph, but Maxine’s will becomes stronger and more resolute – no one understands Earl like her. However, the arrival of a mystery girl looking for Earl has Maxine questioning if she really knows him at all. The furious confrontation that follows triggers a chain of events that leads to tragedy.

The school is still reeling after the murder of Maxine Barlow. Rachel feels responsible - the buck stops with her. She plans to resign with immediate effect. However, the shock revelation from Paul that the gun in the school at the start of term was Earl’s compels her to try and secure Denzil’s release before she goes. Elsewhere, realising that life is precious, Donte surprises Chlo with a romantic proposition and Eddie organises a surprise for Melissa. He’s organised a beach wedding in a tropical paradise – and they leave the following week.

It’s the last day of term at Waterloo Road and everyone is excited about Bolton’s boxing final. Rob is adamant that Bolton’s about to be Rochdale’s next Rocky and a loved up Jasmine is bursting with pride for her man. However, Bolton’s nerves are getting to him and so Rob offers him some help – a bottle of ‘legal’ pills. It’s also the day Eddie and Melissa are due to fly out to Barbados to get married, but things don’t quite go to plan and both Rachel and Eddie are left reeling when the truth finally comes out.

It’s an exciting day at Waterloo Road as Kim Campbell returns from Rwanda to resume her role as Head of Pastoral Care. Popular with staff and students alike, Kim raises a few eyebrows when she turns up with a baby in tow, but no Andrew Treneman. Kim can’t wait to get stuck into work, but the planned careers day, involving former pupils of Waterloo Road, is thrown into chaos with the arrival of Jordan-esque glamour model, Sarah-Leanne. Kim finds herself battling with Sara-Leanne to win the hearts and minds of her celebrity-obsessed students.

Kim’s day starts badly when the uncle of her baby, Grace, shows up at the school threatening to expose a secret about his niece. Kim struggles to keep her personal life from impacting on her job as she tries to get rid of him. Desperate, she turns to Steph, who is immediately suspicious. With Kim’s eye off the ball, Karla Bentham becomes the victim of Michaela White’s scheme to make money, and another type of bullying. It’s a race against time for Kim to recover Karla before her own situation is exposed.

With Rachel on a course, Eddie's at the helm but soon finds out it's not going to be an easy ride - a community of travellers have pitched up next to the school and the kids are to be enrolled at Waterloo Road. Tensions soon mount between the pupils and the travellers. Eddie thinks he has the answer and arranges a football match, but things soon get dirty on the pitch and the simmering tensions of the day bubble over. Before he knows it, Eddie has a riot on his hands.

Matt's choir are practicing hard, now that Rachel wants a performance that evening. Matt is left deflated when it transpires most of the members were blackmailed to attend and the race is on to re-group and recruit willing members in time for their showcase. Meanwhile, a stack of STI leaflets that Kim has been distributing to her sex education class fall into the wrong hands. Kim is dragged before Rachel and Eddie to explain but she’s too consumed with worry as she’s found out the Home Office has hired a private investigator to track her and Grace

Determined to reunite the girl’s football team, Tom persuades his old friend Captain Andy Watson to run an army day at the school, using team building techniques to whip the girls into shape. However, the day descends into a shambolic mess when one pupil sees the opportunity for a personal act of revenge. Elsewhere, Davina is delighted to finally qualify as a teacher, and things seem perfect when Rachel offers her a job at Waterloo Road, but her day starts to unravel when she discovers that money has gone missing from her and Tom's joint account.

Waterloo Road’s latest supply teacher, Jem Allen is proving popular with staff and students alike but her upbeat attitude and glamorous lifestyle are enough to get right up Grantly’s nose. Forced together on a school trip, their antagonism builds to a life-threatening climax. Back at school with the exams in full swing, Chlo realises how much the future she wants will be restricted by motherhood. She is forced to make the hardest decision of her life, with devastating consequences for Donte.

Steph’s return to Waterloo Road starts badly when a pupil leads a class revolt and Rachel blames the problem on her poor teaching skills. The day takes a dramatic turn when Steph discovers the same pupil in a life-threatening situation, but can her actions redeem herself in Rachel’s eyes? Meanwhile Donte is struggling with Chlo’s decision to put their baby up for adoption so that she can pursue her dream of going to university. A concerned Kim mediates. She urges Chlo to involve Donte and ask Tom for advice, but Chlo seems determined to proceed no matter what.

Bitter battle lines are drawn between Chlo and Donte as they wrangle over their baby’s future, but when Chlo goes into a complicated premature labour, Donte finds himself at risk of losing his baby and his wife. Meanwhile, a Home Office official turns up at the school to tell a shocked Eddie and Rachel that Kim has taken Grace from Rwanda against her father's wishes. The officials paint her as little more than a criminal who paid another woman for her baby. What follows sees Kim’s world come crashing down around her.

Still reeling from losing Grace, Kim struggles to hold it together as organiser of a fundraising day at the school. But will a surprise visit from from her ex, Andrew Treneman bring the support she needs or just raise more questions about Kim’s conduct in Rwanda? Meanwhile Rose and Candice prepare a menu for the relief day using their knock-off meat. It’s past its sell-by-date but they’ve given it a once-over and taken off the labels so that no-one is any the wiser. However, when a mystery illness strikes the school, the dodgy dealings in the canteen come under suspicion.

Waterloo Road is in the final of North West Schools Choir of the Year competition, but things take a bad turn when it becomes apparent that Flick stole the lyrics for the song. Rachel decides to save the reputation of the school and withdraws them from the competition. Matt’s gutted and can’t bear for all their hard work and effort to go to waste. Can he and Steph pull out the stops and re-write another song in time to still take part? Back at the school, a loved-up Eddie is totally gobsmacked to find Melissa waiting for him. He’s in for a further shock when she reveals that she’s pregnant. And if matters couldn't be worse Ralph Mellor, still fuming from a restraining Order from Flick, decides to take his anger out on the school with a Bulldozer which leaves Rachel, the staff and Pupils reeling from destruction, devstation and heartbreak, in the explosive series finale.

Series 5 (Late 2009?)

A 20-part fifth series was commissioned in March 2009. Filming began on 11 May 2009 and it is currently expected to air later in the year.
