Mount Surround is a rural locality in the Shire of Burdekin, Queensland, Australia.[2] In the 2021 census, Mount Surround had a population of 130 people.[1]
Geography
[edit]The Bruce Highway enters the locality from the south-east (Shirbourne) and exits to the north (Cromarty).[3][4]
The North Coast railway line forms the north-eastern boundary of the locality, entering from the north-east (Giru) and exiting to the north (Cromarty); no railway stations serve the locality.[4]
The land use is a mixture of crop growing (predominantly sugarcane) and grazing on native vegetation with some rural residential housing.[5]
History
[edit]Mount Surround State School opened 1 April 1932 and closed 3 May 1968.[6] It was on the northern corner of Reed Beds Road and Piralko Road (approx 19°31′02″S 147°03′25″E / 19.51717°S 147.05708°E).[7][8][9]
Demographics
[edit]In the 2016 census, Mount Surround had a population of 145 people.[10]
In the 2021 census, Mount Surround had a population of 130 people.[1]
Education
[edit]There are no schools in Mount Surround. The nearest government primary school is Giru State School in neighbouring Giru to the north-east. The nearest government secondary schools are Ayr State High School in Ayr and William Ross State High School in Annandale, Townsville.[11]
