The 2007 Atlantic hurricane season was an active season with activity both before and after the official bounds of the season; only three seasons accomplished the same feat. During the season, two hurricanes, Dean and Felix, made landfall at Category 5 status, the first such season in history; additionally, the season was one of only four with two Category 5 hurricanes. During the season, Hurricane Humberto strengthened from tropical depression status to 90 mph (150 km) while 15 miles (24 km) off the coast of Texas, becoming a fastest developing storm on record to be so close to land. The month of September had a record tying 8 storms, and throughout the entire season a total of 15 named storms developed; five storms intensified into hurricane status.
Hurricane Noel was the deadliest hurricane season of the season, which killed 163 people as it tracked through the Greater Antilles. Most of the deaths were on Hispaniola, largely as a result of flooding from heavy rainfall, and damage amounted to over $500 million (USD). Hurricane Dean killed 32 people and caused over $5 billion in damage (USD) as it tracked through the central Caribbean Sea and Bay of Campeche. Tropical Storm Erin brought heavy rainfall to Texas and later re-strengthened to produce 80 mph (130 km/h) wind gusts over central Oklahoma. Hurricane Felix caused over 130 deaths when it struck near the border of Nicaragua and Honduras. In December, Tropical Storm Olga caused 40 deaths, mostly in the Dominican Republic, and later dissipated near Florida.
