This is a list

[edit]

Headhitter, I have deleted 'This is a list' as it is against Wikipedia protocol (if that is the correct word) to start a list article that way. I started List of nature reserves in Barnet: 'This is a list of nature reserves in Barnet', but when I put it up for featured list I was told I had to delete it. Dudley Miles (talk) 21:12, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Copy of discussion from Talk:List of people from Cornwall:- "==Self-reference == List articles shouldn't begin with "This is a list of X", but for the life of me I can't think of how to introduce it properly. Actually, according to Wikipedia:SELFREF#Avoid referring to "Wikipedia", one should avoid referring to Wikipedia in articles (e.g., "this Wikipedia article...") but it is perfectly appropriate for an article to refer to itself (e.g., "this article..."). --- c y m r u . l a s s (talk me, stalk me) 21:51, 25 January 2011 (UTC)"--Johnsoniensis (talk) 18:08, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure why but when an article is put up for FLC editors object to it starting "This is a list" - and it is far easier to change it than get into a debate about it. Dudley Miles (talk) 18:24, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why no table of contents?

[edit]

Can anyone advise why this article has no table of contents? It does not have __NOTOC__ and similar articles such as List of nature reserves in Barnet do have a contents table. Thanks Dudley Miles (talk) 16:10, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ah there is a TOC its just using a template to make it compact. Look under the Sites heading, and you will see it. Let me know if you any questions. --Clarkcj12 (talk) 16:14, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Revert of deletion of coords

[edit]

I have reverted this deletion as it is standard to give coords for the area for geographical list articles. Dudley Miles (talk) 14:42, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, wasn't aware of this. --Lord Belbury (talk) 16:19, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Issues

[edit]

I don't often get involved in Featured articles or lists, it's well put together, better than I could manage. I see some issues with the list, some I tried to fix, some I do not know how to fix. I added Grove Park Nature Reserve to the list in the same format as the other entries. The site that shows the location of all the sites on the map, also shows this site as a designated "local nature reserve" as well. Unless I'm mistaken, the list only shows reserves which have a wikipedia article, it does not contain red links, and this reserve did not have an article when the list was made, so I guess that's why it was left off?

I imagine all the links worked when the list was made and promoted to featured list. But as it is at the moment, at least for me when I'm clicking them, every link in the "Details" column just goes to A 404 not found page and displays no details. A few have an archive link, in addition to the regular link, but most do not. I would add archive links myself, but that is a little outside my skill set.

New Cross Gate Cutting aka Brockley Nature Reserve. The map link actually goes to the map for Burnt Ash Pond not Brockley Nature Reserve. I was going to alter the link, but when I searched for Brockley, or New Cross there are no matches, and when you find the location on the map yourself, it does not show it as a local nature reserve. Either, it is not one, or it is but a different authority acknowledges/declares this one, but not this authority? just a guess, but the link is wrong. I altered the coordinates for this site, appeared to be a simple east vs west error, as it was previously pointing to a residential street, altering it to west instead of east now puts it on the site I believe.

This may be beyond the scope of this list, and a point to bring up somewhere else. I am confused about the area of some sites. The designation page of Grove Park Nature Reserve lists it as being 2.74 ha, but everywhere else says it's 4.6 ha, when looking on a map it does look like 4.6 ha is more correct to me. And the sources for New Cross Gate Cutting state both 3 ha and 4.19. This may be due to sites being a certain size but only part of the site being officially designated as a local nature reserve, not the site in full. Or a site increasing or decreasing in size. Or simply mistakes. But I don't know, only guessing.

Also, the lead states the "newest" LNR are several that were designated in 2013. But it appears Grove Park Nature Reserve was designated in 2020. Which may another reason it was not in the list. Grove Park Nature Reserve 2020

In 2013-14 I photographed and wrote articles about all London LNRs which did not already have articles. I then nominated this list for FLC. Since then there have been large scale changes in the data. Natural England has revised its site so that all or almost all the links no longer work. Sites have been added to the list and others deleted. The total has increased from 144 in 2016 to 153 in 2024. The list - and no doubt all the other county lists of LNRs and SSSIs - require updating. This would be a massive job, and I am too occupied with other projects to take it on, so unfortunately the lists will remain out of date. If anyone else wants to take it on, I would be happy to advise in case of any problems. Dudley Miles (talk) 12:05, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
