You should make a page of the GMs who've been GM of the most NHL teams, or GM's whove been GM for the most number of years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.152.249.60 (talk) 00:39, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Playing career & Family relations

[edit]

Why are we including their past playing careers & family ties? GoodDay (talk) 21:19, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me to be perfectly relevant background information. Centpacrr (talk) 22:05, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
216.31.219.19 (an anonymous user like me) WP:BOLDly added columns for College, Pro Career and Family Relations. I removed the College column which I believe to be inappropriate since university is virtually never mentioned with respect to hockey personnel. In addition there were no references and I suspect to be incomplete due to lack of reliable source references. I also removed the Family Relations column which although I find it somewhat interesting how many GMs are part of hockey families, I thought it was basically inappropriate trivia for this page. I left the Pro Career column since I agreed it was relevant. Centpacrr then restored the Family relations column for reasons I personally disagree with. 69.158.124.30 (talk) 03:00, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Having worked professionally in pro hockey for 45 years with an abundant appreciation for the history of the game (especially as it applies to the vast numbers of cross and intragenerational familial relationships), and in that 11 of the NHL's 30 GM's have one or more such relations listed in the chart (including Philadelphia GM Ron Hextall with four relations over four generations), I find that including "Hockey family" both relevant and significant.Centpacrr (talk) 04:25, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would remove the family column. The fact that those people have family in hockey is interesting and should be covered in their articles. However, it is completely non-relevant to a list of GMs. -DJSasso (talk) 18:20, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I must disagree for the reasons I gave above. The fact that 11 out of 30 of the GMs listed have one or more relations who have played and/or managed in pro hockey (or 37%) is a significant number. That being the case, including it seems highly relevant information to me, and if nothing else doing so also certainly does no harm. Centpacrr (talk) 19:36, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We should atleast remove the 'family relations' column, as there's no definitive proof that DNA plays a part in one's ability as GM. GoodDay (talk) 20:38, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Really, GoodDay, including this column has absolutely nothing to do with attempting to establish "definitive proof that DNA plays a part in one's ability as GM", but instead demonstrates -- and verifies -- that the unusually high rate of cross and intragenerational familial relationships that have long existed in pro hockey extends to management as well. If only one or two GMs had such relationships then I would see a point in not including this column, but the fact that 37% (11 of 30) of these GMs have anywhere from one to four such "hockey family" relations is both a relevant and significant commonality pattern to acknowledge, demonstrate, and include. And again including this accurate information does absolutely no harm to the listing. Far from it. Centpacrr (talk) 21:09, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This info belongs to List of family relations in the NHL -- GoodDay (talk) 21:16, 28 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is certainly appropriate to include this information in the list of relations as well, but when such a relatively large percentage (37%) of the 30 current GMs in the NHL have from one to four such relations that in and of itself is notable and deserving of inclusion in this listing as well. Even if this is of no particular interest to you, that does not mean it is not to others. And last but not least, including it also certainly does no harm! Centpacrr (talk) 20:11, 29 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It serves no purpose, other then mere trivia. GoodDay (talk) 03:55, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The relations are of no use in this list. It's a list of general managers and should stick to the most important facts. No need for their family members, favorite colors, and pizza toppings of choice. Gloss 04:02, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
These are not simply "family members", but family relations all 14 of whom are all wikilinked to their own Wikipedia entries as persons with notable careers in professional hockey. (Also see supra.) As for "favorite colors and pizza toppings", nobody is proposing that. ;) Centpacrr (talk) 05:01, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes notable people with wiki pages which have nothing to do with this very specific topic. ie a list of general managers. This isn't a list of general managers and their family relations. -DJSasso (talk) 04:22, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Again, it is not just ''notable people" it is 14 "notable NHL PRO HOCKEY people" who are the relations of 11 of the 30 (37%) NHL GMs. Really, why is that so hard to understand? Centpacrr (talk) 05:22, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's just trivia & nothing more. Note, we don't have this stuff in the List of NHL head coaches article. GoodDay (talk) 18:00, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The NHL Head coaches chart has three times as many columns (15) in its chart as GMs (5). Centpacrr (talk) 20:58, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say this is a fair enough consensus to justify removing the column, no? Gloss 20:20, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No. Centpacrr (talk) 20:53, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Easy to say when you're on the 1 side of a 3-1 consensus. I'll go ahead and remove it now. Gloss 21:51, 1 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Too crowded"

[edit]

Can you please explain your revert @Centpacrr:? All I've done here is adding an image to the lead and removed the fixed width, which isn't necessary. But neither of these strike me as something that could make the page "too crowded" so I'm left confused. Gloss 17:34, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
