Name change request
[edit]I would ask that this page be renamed Sri Atmananda or Sri Atmananda Krishna Menon. Reason: He was not a swami. The bio on this page makes this clear. It is also clear from the biography in The Spiritual Discourses of Sree Atmananda that he was not a swami. Additionally, there are some other teachers who go by the name Swami Atmananda, and it will confuse people to have Sri Atmananda Krishna Menon misnamed as Swami Atmananda. Source 'New Religious Movements in the Twenty-first Century' by Philip Lucas does not accurately refer to the topic of Atmananda Krishna Menon.
[edit]Source 'New Religious Movements in the Twenty-first Century' by Philip Lucas does not accurately refer to the topic of Atmananda Krishna Menon. One editor insists on stating that 'His teachings have become a foundation for a 'cult' called the Direct Path while citing the above source. I disagree with the use of the word cult. It is misleading because the source book mentions & discusses the direct path in the middle eastern/islamic context while talking about one unnamed follower who used to hold talks in Egypt. Please note tha Shree Atmananda was an Indian sage. The Direct path is a well respected path advocated by revered Hindu Sages like Ramana Maharishi & Shree Atmananda. [1] Therefore, this source does not do justice to Atmananda Krishna Menon's teachings. I propose that the denigratory word 'cult' be removed and replaced with a neutral word 'path'.

There is a problem with the title of this page. Shri Atmananda (a.k.a. Shri Krishna Menon) was not a swami. The title "Swami" is given specifically to a "sannyasi" or a "renouncer". Shri Atmananda did not take "sannyasa". He did not renounce the world, but remained a householder throughout his life. He was very particular about this, and thus asked to be known as "Shri Atmananda", without any furhter title such as "Swami". To call him "Swami Atmananda" is thus misleading and confusing. In particular, it confuses him with sannyasis who are quite correctly known as "Swami Atmananda". So I suggest the title of this page should be ammended to "Shri Atmananda". 59.165.131.33 01:02, 5 June 2007 (UTC) |
