Obvious cases?
[edit]What exactly would constitute a clear case when the host is a mobile phone? From what I've seen so far, most cases when I've considered using this banner, it's been unclear as the company provides both mobile phone service and standard ISP service. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 13:53, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- If an ISP provides both, it's usually easy to tell which it is because mobile IPs usually either indicate so on the WHOIS information or in the RDNS. ISPs almost never use the same ranges for mobile and land line. AT&T and Verizon don't use proxies, but AT&T usually either indicates "mycingular" in the RDNS, and Verizon makes it obvious by registering IPs as "Cellco Partnership DBA Verizon Wireless." BlackBerry devices ususally channel through Research In Motion proxies and have "blackberry.net" in their RDNS. Opera Mini now has XFF, but in case a glitch occurs and an Opera Mini IP shows up, their IPs are registered to "Opera Software" and usually "operamini.com" shows up in RDNS. Why do we need a separate template for mobile networks any way? As stated above, mobile networks can be a times difficult to distinguish from landlines, and it's basically the same concept for a mobile network to use shared IPs as it is for ISPs like HughesNet, AOL, MSN, and Earthlink to use shared IPs, and this template isn't really being used that much. If we keep this, then I propose that we move it to SharedIPMobile since that would make it similar to SharedIPEDU, therefore making it easier to remember. - My belief is that it's intended to indicate that not only is it a likely-shared IP, the user may change from good to bad and back again in a matter of minutes. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 01:22, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Update to make more like Template:Shared IP
[edit]Shared IP has been updated to make the template friendlier, perhaps we should do the same with Shared IP edu, Mobile IP, and Shared IP gov? PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 04:59, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

The WHOIS links for the template errors out and the sole maintainer is sporadically active. Could someone switch the URL to https://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/gateway.py?lookup=true&ip=(insert IP here). See this diff to help explain what I mean. Kb03 (talk) 05:57, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Not done @Kb03: please make your proposed change in the Template:Mobile IP/sandbox first, validate, then reactivate the edit request. Support the change has the prior tool is no longer maintained. — xaosflux Talk 01:08, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Xaosflux: Sorry, first bout with template editing. I made the test edit here and validated here with no problems. Now would I have to go back and do this for all the templates I edit requested? Kb03 (talk) 19:03, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Kb03: yes please - when they are ready like this one, just change the answered=yes back to =no along with your note and they will get processed. For "edit requests" (not just about templates) please always include the exact edit you would make. For templates the easiest way is to usually copy the entire template wikitext to to /sandbox, then edit it in there. For very minor edits you can just put the exact text on the talk page (like "change ?wmflabs/xxx/123.asp" to "change ?wmflabs/xxx/876.asp"). That way it is clear for whoever is processing the protected page queue exactly what you would like done. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 21:16, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

Please replace Create an account!
with Create an account!
, so that "Create an account" links to the page to create an account.
Please also change registering an account!
to registering an account!
for the same reason (registering an account is the same as creating one).
