Upper caption

[edit]

What does Upper caption do? - Peregrine Fisher 17:54, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adds a caption into a coloured part of the infobox above the sample --lincalinca 05:09, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No it doesn't. See The Transformed Man. The template there includes |Upper caption=Mr. Tambourine Man, but the default text "Audio sample" is displayed. This template appears to be broken. HairyWombat (talk) 20:42, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think you've misunderstood. The caption added is always "audio sample" - {{{Upper sample}}} is just a switch to turn this on. It isn't a freeform text field. I've clarified the documentation. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:15, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for changing the docs. Looking at the way |Upper caption= is being used (see for example "Stairway to Heaven"), I am not the only user who was confused. There is clearly a desire that this parameter be a freeform text field. Why not change it so that "Audio sample" becomes the default text. This change would need to be made quickly to avoid Infoboxes displaying "yes". HairyWombat (talk) 16:17, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can see the logic there. Feel free to throw up an editprotected if no-one disagrees over the next few days. it would be a good idea to have a look through the existing transclusions to check if any existing cases use "yes" or the like though first, to make sure this doesn't negatively impact current deployments. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 21:33, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"What links here" shows that about 720 articles use this template. Looking through existing transclusions is therefore a job for a bot. I don't write bots, so cannot help. I guess, though, the template cannot be changed until this is done. Ah well ... HairyWombat (talk) 00:46, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need to ensure that all of them would be unaffected. Skimming through the first hundred wouldn't take more than half an hour and would be more than adequate statistically. Half an hour's work to positively impact several hundred current transclusions, along with all future ones, seems like a reasonable tradeoff. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 02:01, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm convinced. Let me know when it has been done. HairyWombat (talk) 06:07, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't actually volunteering. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:03, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please add "text-align:center;" to the "Audio sample" <th> to bring in line with other such parameters. 🖖ATinySliver/ATalkPage 04:54, 18 January 2016 (UTC) 🖖ATinySliver/ATalkPage 04:54, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple samples

[edit]

Is there any way to use the template for multiple tracks with the heading "Audio sample" appearing once as "Audio samples"? Squandermania (talk) 01:29, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Squandermania: Just seeing this now (and your note at Template talk:Extra music sample). The template documentation page "header" section under "Usage" explains it and the code is included under "Example": multiple template:audio sample are used, but the after the first template, subsequent templates should use |header=no. (FYI: Template:Listen#Multiple files does it differently). Here's an example with two Template:Audio sample in an infobox. —Ojorojo (talk) 16:02, 30 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deprecating

[edit]

Is there any reason not to deprecate this template into something like |sample=123.ogg for the song infobox, at least for the vast majority of articles that only include a single sample? --Ilovetopaint (talk) 10:02, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ilovetopaint: Presumably this is because of the other helper templates that are used in |misc=? It would become more difficult to reorder them if this were hard-coded into the template, and it would be inconsistent, I guess. Other than that, the only reasons not to do so are that (1) the template currently works just fine; (2) if we get rid of this one we may as well get rid of the others, but that would require Lua to allow |sample2=, |sample3=, and so on. Removing non-free audio from the infobox

[edit]

After the deletion discussion was closed as opposed, we are left with a template that has been misused hundreds of times by editors putting non-free listening examples into the infobox without "contextual significance" – a description of what can be heard on the audio file. Non-free listening examples must have descriptive text. At the same time, infoboxes should not be cluttered with descriptive text. The two requirements are antithetical, with no room for compromise.

We need to remove non-free audio samples from the infobox. All of them.

We also need to change the template instructions to say that non-free listening examples must be placed in the article body, accompanied by a text description, preferably using Template:Listen rather than Template:Audio sample. The instructions here should be very clear that this template is not intended for non-free audio. Suggestions? Binksternet (talk) 22:25, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please sync the the code from the sandbox to this template. Permalink: Special:PermaLink/1105565749.

The change is essentially surrounding the file param with PAGENAME (which gets rid of any extraneous namespaces that may have been included), i.e. [[:File:{{{file}}}|file]][[:File:{{PAGENAME:{{{file}}}}}|file]]

See the current testcases for the demo in behavior (the redlink in the live template). 69.203.136.65 (talk) 20:44, 20 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
