.hack//Another Birth

[edit]

.hack//Another Birth (.hack//もうひとつの誕生, dotto hakku//Mō Hitotsu no Tanjō) is a novelization of .hack, the video game series for the PlayStation 2. Whereas .hack is told from Kite's perspective, Another Birth is told from BlackRose's perspective. As of December 2005, four novels have been released in Japan under the Another Birth banner; one for each PlayStation 2 game. The first volume was released in North America on June 13, 2006, the second was released on October 10, 2006, the third was released on February 6, 2007, and the fourth was released on July 3, 2007.

While the original four .hack video games followed the tales and travels of Kite, these books tell the story all over again, from the view of Akira Hayami, also known as BlackRose in The World. When her younger brother, Fumikazu, falls into a coma while playing The World, Akira decides to figure out why it happened, and launches herself into the most exciting, and dangerous, journey she will ever have to encounter. Where she meets the twin blade Kite whose friend Orca has fallen into a coma too. Together they venture to find out The World's innermost secrets meeting new friends along the way who aid them in their journey.

.hack//AI Buster

[edit]

.hack//AI buster is a novel by Tatsuya Hamazaki in the Japanese multimedia franchise .hack. It was published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten in 2002, and was translated and published in an English form by Tokyopop in 2005. Chronologically in the series, it is set before the anime .hack//Sign.

AI buster sets both in The World and in the real world. The story is told from the first person point of view of two characters as they interact with Lycoris, a Vagrant AI who seemingly can't be deleted. Watarai, the first character introduced, is the captain of the Cobalt Knights, a group of system administrators whose purpose is to delete Vagrant AIs. "Albireo" is the in-game name of the second and primary protagonist, a self-described lone wolf who encounters, and later is followed by, Lycoris.

.hack//Cell

[edit]

.hack//CELL is a novel series written by Ryo Suzukaze, serialized in the magazine .hack//G.U.: The World, and published in paperback format by Kadokawa Shoten as a chapter in the .hack universe. It follows the experiences of a female Edge Punisher, Midori, as she hires herself out to players who want to fight her without resistance. Tokyopop has obtained that rights to .hack//CELL and was release in March, 2nd, 2010.[1]

.hack//CELL takes place at the same time as .hack//Roots. The main premise of the story covers the happenings that Midori and Adamas witness and experience in The World R:2, an extremely popular MMORPG that is a new version of the original game, The World. Midori meets numerous characters from .hack//Roots (most notably Haseo,) and .hack//G.U. (such as Silabus and Gaspard.) The main plot centers around Midori selling herself out to would-be PKers, and some real-world events that center around the girl who also bears the name Midori who is in a coma. It is later revealed that Midori is a sentient PC, and was a result of the "virtual cell" that was taken from Midori Shimomura's blood. After Midori Shimomura wakes, she enters The World with a PC identical to Midori.
