The licensing on this image is contradictory and given the ease by which it should be able to be replaced it should propably go. The upload added a reference to GFDL but also restricted commercial use (go back in the history before the bots and other uses adapted what was the uploader's intent [1]) Jordan 1972 (talk) 00:45, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. This is the only image I'm aware of that shows a woman being executed in the football stadium. It has become an iconic image, taken by a photographer who put herself in great danger to film it undercover, and is exactly the kind of image we're allowed to claim fair use for. NFCC isn't based on whether someone could release their copyright under a free license simply because everyone could release their copyright under a free license. Keep - Movie clips from the video film by RAWA aired on Channel 4 (UK), CNN and many other media outlets. This screen shot is for critical commentary on the video and its contents as it relates to the Taliban treatment of women. The critical commentary is based on source material, including Antonowicz, Anton (June 20, 2002). "Zarmina's Story". Daily Mirror. Retrieved 18 October 2008. and other reliable sources as listed in the Taliban treatment of women article. There is no free equivalent of this screen shot and one cannot be reasonably created, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. There is a very important distinction between using an image that is being critically discussed, or where the event portray is being discussed, and using an image that merely relates to what is being discussed. If these images were used on articles dedicated to the events portrayed, the images would be appropriate fair use, but they are decorations on an article like Taliban treatment of women - the article doesnt mention these events except in the image description. Delete. There is no visual requirement in the article for this image. It definitely augments the article, there are no passages in the article body that make it so that we need to see a woman being executed. Either write to RAWA and get a release, or rewrite the article that cites this particular scene in this particular video based on reliable third-party sources. It has been difficult to add material to this article, Howcheng, because we seem to have Taliban sympathizers in our community. That the material about women was relegated to a subpage in the first place tells you something, and attempts to add anything informative are regularly reverted. Keep It has a well written fair use rationale here with a clear date and location. The image highlights the Taliban's brutal treatment of women under their rule where women were denied a high school education. It cannot be easily replicated. Its use is in scope...and as someone notes, this is the only image of a woman being publicly executed in a football field. Even the Taliban didn't care if there was a risk someone would take a picture in such an open place since they wanted to intimidate the local population with these staged 'events.' --Leoboudv (talk) 03:49, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Strong deleteit is being used in the lead of an article that is not about the image, or indeed the events it depicts. It adds nothing educational, and is frankly being used simply for sock value. Comment It was used as the lead of an article because it depicted the brutality of the Taliban's reign in Afghanistan...where women had zero rights and were condemned to a medieval existence with no education, or expectation of leaving their homes in public without their parents accompanying them. Why would the copyright holder ever release this iconic image into the public domain? Keep -- Afghanistan is not a signatory to any International copyright agreement, and it has no domestic copyright laws. I've asked for opinions on the copyright status of Afghan images on the village pump -- several times. The consensus has been that Afghan images should be considered in the public domain. Mind you only a few people replied each time. But no one has offered a counter-argument. I know some wire services act as if the party which first publishes an Afghan image outside of Afghanistan can claim all rights to it. Personally, I find this kind of claim unconvincing. This image's license as added by uploader states that there can be no finaical gain and that it complies with IRIN guidelines. Those guidelines specifically restrict commerical use and derivative works. There is nothing remarkable about the image that would overcome the non-free image criteria; the image simply shows the building on fire, something the article text clearly comunicates. - It says the image can't be modified except to resize. Doesn't say anything about copying, or about printing in different media (hard copy vs. electronic) and so forth, and doesn't prevent it from being incorporated in some other work. Is there a policy that says that restrictions preventing image cropping are not permitted? I'm geniunely curious because that would require content creators to give up an important moral right.   - I am far from anykind of expert here, but I would think in the strictest sense a resize would not be a derivative but a crop would; a resize simply takes the same amount of data and expands or shrinks it and a crop permantently deletes the data. This generally would not be an issue because with free images here should not be a limitation on use. My take on this given license is that I could take this image and add it to my webpage, my community newsletter or in my coffee table book as long as I only changed the complete image's size. I would not be able to add big red "do not" circle over top or a cartoon thought bubble - these two things modify the image. Another way to think about it would be that by resizing you are not applying any creativity to the new product whereas with cropping there is a level of creativity -- why did you crop out that tree, why change it from a landscape to a portrite orientation.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 14:21, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      - I have been reviewing policy/guidelines and the Help on images and uploads (here and also at Commons) and there is nothing I have found that specifically speaks about cropping/altering. The only thing I could find was around the requirement not to disallow derivatives. Following the logic train, that if an image can not be cropped, which is a derivative, it is not free enough therefore is not suitible for WP.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 16:34, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Book cover used only in the article about Wendell Sailor, the rugby player who wrote the book. It is included next to a paragraph which does mention this book, but the book cover does not "significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic" and its omission would not be "detrimental to that understanding". The source (which I found at [2]) makes no reference to the re-usability of any of the photographer's photos; infact they received the rights to publish a CD of the images.
