I think it is a good time to go! UnKnownrNone (talk) 06:30, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@UnKnownrNone That makes a lot of sense. After all, actually improving this encyclopaedia is what we should all be here for. Your ratio of user page edits to mainspace edits isn't too worrying - but I agree: now's the time to get cracking on proper editing.
BTW: I see no evidence of your Userpage claim to have been nominated for 'Editor of the Week Award' since you started here just two weeks ago. I might have missed something, of course, but it's important you don't accidentally mislead people with incorrect claims. Next thing then to happen would be that someone might not believe you're genuinely a radiologist working in Canada! Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:07, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Updating a page while retaining proper attribution[edit]

I've been working with another user (Pete Nelson from UKY) to create an improved version of an article in userspace. (For specifics, the article to be improved is Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy and the userspace draft is User:WikiDan61/LATE). I've checked with WP:WikiProject Medicine and have received at positive (not rousing, but at least positive) reception regarding the current state of the draft. I'd like to merge the contents of this user-space draft into the mainspace article while properly giving attribution to Pete Nelson for his contributions in the draft space. How do I go about doing that? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:20, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Vis-a-vis Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy, last month User:Pete Nelson from UKY completely rewrote the article, in the process deleting all but one of the references and adding his own sci journal articles as references. His efforts were correctly reverted. He should review Wikipedia:Expert editors and WP:SELFCITE. David notMD (talk) 13:01, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As for the draft now at User:WikiDan61/LATE I am guessing/hoping that it includes the references that are in the existing article. Large chunks of text are not referenced, and of greater concern, I counted 17 of the 65 refs as having P Nelson as first author. I strongly recommend that the two of you collaborate on a revision that has all content referenced and as few as possible citations of Nelson et al. As for acknowledging contributions, Wikipedia does not do that in articles. I suppose on the Talk page of the article, you could add a new section stating that Nelson contributed to the revisions. David notMD (talk) 13:13, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi thanks David notMD. I wrote the previous version as well. I can cull “my” references and add others? In terms of editorial attribution, I think WikiDan61 was just talking about the edit log. 128.163.238.97 (talk) 13:17, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Little stuff: Reference numbers are to be placed after punctuation. Sci article publication dates are month and year, as in May 2024, not 2024-05. Authors in journal refs are last name and initials rather than full first name. A shortcut: enter a PMID number into https://tools.wmflabs.org/citation-template-filling/cgi-bin/index.cgi and it generates a reference. I sam not against improving medical/health articles (I have raised several to Good Article status in my area of expertise), but the more common practice is to incrementally improve the existing article rather than replace entirety. I understand how the latter approach can be attractive when so much needs to be improved. Lastly, Wikipedia recommends "BRD", meaning be Bold in your edits, but if Reverted, take the dispute to the Talk page of the article for a Discussion-effort to reach consensus. Many articles have multiple 'watchers' who have set an option so that when they log in they are notified of any edits to articles they watch. There is no ownership, per se, but there can be strong opinions as to what is correct. David notMD (talk) 13:29, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks David notMD.
I actually edited the wikipedia page to conform with Wikipedia standard page formatting for disease (it was like an essay, before and was rated to be basically substandard for that reason. Honestly the basic substance of the page is not that different, it's the same disease.)
Some of the references in the revised page are redundant, i.e., they're the same ref but given different numbers. I don't know how to clean that up?
Thanks again,
Pete Nelson Pete Nelson from UKY (talk) 16:42, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pete Nelson from UKY For replacing cites used multiple times with a single reference, see WP:NAMED. The template rp can be useful if you have, say, a book source and are quoting from different pages at different places in your text. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:24, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hm thanks but I couldn't figure that out, it's very complicated-seeming. There must be an easier way to recognize and consolidate duplicated references?
Thanks again,

@Pete Nelson from UKY, Michael D. Turnbull, and David notMD: I've updated the page for citation style issues (duplicates; WP:REFPUNCT; display authors). I hope that helps. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 18:41, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@128.163.238.97 and Pete Nelson from UKY: Thanks, but I do wish you'd learn how to properly format citation dates and duplicate citations. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:02, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Argh did I do it wrong? I thought that the point of the visual editor mode was to make it so dummies like me could add and edit entries? 128.163.238.97 (talk) 20:08, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@128.163.238.97 and Pete Nelson from UKY: If you see red error text in your citations, they should be fixed. Specifically, the date format "yyyy-mm" is not valid. "yyyy-mm-dd" is valid, but if there is no specific day of publication (only a month), then it must be formatted as "<Month name> <year>". Also, per WP:REFPUNCT, citations always follow punctuation, not precede it. (The result should look like this,1 not this2.) WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:22, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again WikiDan61! I made the recommended changes, see what you think? Pete Nelson from UKY (talk) 01:37, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FYI for anyone late to the show: This is about User:WikiDan61/LATE, which is being proposed as a complete replacement of Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy. One unresolved issue us that at least 12 refs, some used multiple times, are co-authored by Pete Nelson, a person involved in replacing the original article. Wikipedia:Expert editors and WP:SELFCITE were mentioned earlier in this posting. David notMD (talk) 02:50, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hi, thanks for this…to clarify, I am wrote the prior page also and the reason I’m replacing that page is to conform with Wikipedia formatting specs. And yes there are refs cited that I’m a coauthor of but the refs most frequently cited are consensus papers with a lot of other superb coauthors. 74.136.40.218 (talk) 11:55, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nonsense Placeholder[edit]

Including a template in a link works here but not in articlespace[edit]

Is it possible to include a template in the display text of a link? Specifically, I am trying to render the following:

extreme raising of /æ/

What's weird is, on this particular page, this produces a functioning link: extreme raising of /æ/. However, in articlespace, it produces broken output; see, for example, this page; Ctrl+F search for "extreme raising of" to locate the relevant bit of text. The corresponding diff is here; you can see I used the exact same wikitext as above—in fact, I copy-pasted it here to produce the link at the beginning of this paragraph.

What gives?

n.b.: The initial colon in the link is due to the slash; see Wikipedia:Articles with slashes in title Brusquedandelion (talk) 20:07, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Brusquedandelion, and welcome to the Teahouse. This behaviour is documented at Template:IPA. Adding |cat=no should fix it. ColinFine (talk) 20:53, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photo in infobox[edit]

Hello. How can I add a photo in the Infobox section of my page? Np3 1997 (talk) 21:55, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

on User:Np3_1997/sandbox you are using which does not have an option for images. it does have a parameter for logos, but non-free images are not allowed outside of articles. Please note that Wikipedia is not for promotion. RudolfRed (talk) 22:02, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Np3 1997: The above reply is incorrect. See Template:Infobox company for how to display a photo or other image in the infobox with the |image= parameter. The image has to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons or the English Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:11, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suggesting articles for improvement?[edit]

Hello! Is there a way to suggest or nominate particular articles for improvement? I've put a lot of work into a couple pages, but they still need lots of work that I don't have the time or energy for. I know there are no deadlines on WP, so it's not exactly an urgent matter, but these pages are culturally important and I would love to see them get some serious attention from editors besides myself. Wafflewombat (talk) 22:06, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's perhaps a job for the relevant WikiProject(s); but most WikiProjects are either more or less moribund or already have requests like yours, or both. -- Hoary (talk) 23:02, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity, was there ever a Golden Age of Wikipedia, when WikiProjects were not moribund? Wafflewombat (talk) 02:05, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There was an age when even English-language Wikipedia was young and perhaps more exciting than it is now, and when WikiProjects can be said to have flourished. But -- however understandably and excusably, given the circumstances -- a high percentage of the articles were crap. Back then, perhaps Wikipedia glistered, but it was hardly golden. -- Hoary (talk) 02:57, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Wafflewombat: That's a good question. Wikipedia generally felt more lively before c. 2011, but I don't remember if that translated to WikiProjects specifically. The number of active editors fell by a third between 2009 and 2014 and has since remained roughly the same, but the number of WikiProjects has increased. It stands to reason that less people spread over more projects would lead to a loss of activity. On the other hand, there are projects that have managed to remain active (e.g. WP:MILHIST, WP:MED), including some created after 2014 (e.g. WP:WOMRED). You really need a proactive core group to keep them going and I suspect that the majority of WikiProjects just never had that. – Joe (talk) 19:43, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Six Flags[edit]

I am becoming concerned that the person who opened a discussion about a potential move for Six Flags , is not following procedure. He has continued to time and time again to count the for move and against move as a vote, which goes against WP: Vote. He also plans to close the article himself, with what seems to be the attention of moving the Article. Therefore I am requesting here that a neutral party close the discussion soon. Please help for the sake of neutrality and integrity. BigRed606 (talk) 22:24, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @BigRed606, welcome to the Teahouse. The place to ask for an uninvolved editor to close a discussion is Wikipedia:Closure requests. (And behavioral complaints should go to WP:ANI.) 57.140.16.8 (talk) 13:51, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your help! Bilibala0088 (talk) 04:00, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bilibala0088, you made one edit to User:Bilibala0088/Michael_MMG and five minutes later posted the request above. A bot later fixed your Mediawiki syntax errors: was that the help that you'd hoped experienced users would provide? If no it wasn't, and you were and are instead hoping that experienced users will complete the translation, add internal links, make sure that what look like references really are references, etc etc, then I should warn you that this is not likely to happen. If OTOH you have a specific, minor request, or a question about how to accomplish this or that, then feel free to post it here. -- Hoary (talk) 08:51, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Bilibala0088: welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia.
Creating a new article is one of the most challenging tasks there is in Wikipedia, and I always advise new editors to not even think of doing so until they have spent a few weeks or months learning about how Wikipedia works by working on improving existing articles.
You might think that translating an article from another language Wikipedia is easier: occasionally it might be, but often it is really no different. A large part of this is because English Wikipedia is stricter than many about its standards for sourcing information. I don't read Chinese, so I don't know the quality of the sources in zh-tw:馬米高; but I observe that the section 簡歷, which I think means "biography" has very few citations in it. In English Wikipedia, biographies of living people require extensive citations. And if you take an existing text (translation or otherwise) and try to add citations afterwards, your job will be very much harder than if you worked from the sources (see BACKWARDS).
So, my advice would be to put this aside until you have an understanding of core policies such as reliable sources, independent sources, neutral point of view, and notability. Then read translation and your first article, and give it a try. ColinFine (talk) 09:39, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citing translated books[edit]

When citing a book, particularly in sfn, would I use the date it was originally published or the translated date? Also, how would you add the translated date to the source in references? Thank you. Dantus21 (talk) 11:17, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would use the translated date for the sfn since it appears first in the full citation. You can use the orig-date parameter in the cite book template to specify the original publication date. Example below:
Mysterious English Translated Book. November 1901 [Danish original publication: December 1899].

Shouldn't this be a subcategory of Category:board members? I always wondered why that category doesn't exist when we have dozens of categories with "board members" in the title Trade (talk) 11:30, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Trade. Welcome to the Teahouse. I can't imagine anyone being interested in such a vague category. A "board" means different things in different contexts, per board. Shantavira|feed me 13:32, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There must be something in common Trade (talk) 13:33, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Category:School board members, Category:Members of district health boards in New Zealand and Category:Provincial board members in the Philippines looks a little too diverse to me. Maybe if a category was limited to boards of an organization. By the way, I found Category:Grey's Anatomy task force administrative board members. Wow, we have an administrative board for editors of a specific TV series. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:00, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The phrase "board member" to me immediately conjures up the idea of a member of the board of directors of a company, i.e. a director. While there are other kinds of board (boards of governors, boards of trustees etc) I would not use or understand the phrase in those senses unless the context had already established what kind of board we were talking abou.t ColinFine (talk) 10:44, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Red Link[edit]

Hi - I'm trying to add a Red Link to 'Pero Jones' on the Pero's Bridge page, because the bridge is named after him, and he needs his own page as there is a lot of published information about him, which is unusual for an enslaved person in Bristol at that time. I'm planning to do this in the not too distant future. But when I put in the double brackets round his name it creates a hyperlink to the Pero's Bridge page, and I can't work out why it does that, or how to give it the red link. Help me please!

Hope that makes sense. Ruthhenrietta (talk) 14:18, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ruthhenrietta the reason it links back to the Pero's Bridge article, is that Pero Jones is currently a redirect to the bridge article. Click on Pero Jones and than look at the very top of the Pero's Bridge page and it should say "(Redirected from Pero Jones)". If you click on that link it will take you to the redirect, which explains the link is
With possibilities: This is a redirect from a title that potentially could be expanded into a new article or other type of associated page such as a new template. The topic described by this title may be more detailed than is currently provided on the target page or in a section of that page.
We don't want a circular redirect whilst there is no article on Pero Jones, but that description should encourage you to consider creating such an article. - Arjayay (talk) 14:25, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Ruthhenrietta (talk) 15:52, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Ruthhenrietta. Pero Jones is a redirect to Pero's Bridge because he has a significant mention there and doesn't have his own article. It for example helps users who search information about him by entering his name in the search box. It also means he can be linked in other articles like History of Bristol#Slave trade. But a link in Pero's Bridge is unhelpful if it just redirects back to the page itself. I have used Pero Jones.[1] This omits a link when it would redirect back to the page but makes a link if it becomes an article or a redirect to a different article. The redirect is appropriate now but see Help:Redirect#Creating and editing redirects if you want to make an article. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:35, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for doing that and explaining clearly. I might have to come back to you at the point when I make the page... I'm still learning! Ruthhenrietta (talk) 15:54, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Ruthhenrietta. While it is possible to create an article by simply editing the redirect page, I would advise against doing it this way unless you are confident that you can in your first edit create something that meets the basic requirements for sourcing and establishing notability. Generally it is better to create the new article as a draft, and then either submit it for review, or (if you are confident it will pass review) making a move request to move your draft over the redirect. Question about sources[edit]

Hi everyone,

I created a page Draft:Left Angle and it was initially declined for the sources, so I read the information about in-depth, reliable, secondary, and independent sources and resubmitted the article with new sources a few times but it keeps getting rejected.

I really want to get it right and have even used the template below to try and organize and analyze the sources in accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines. Could someone help me better understand which of my sources (if not all of them) don't meet the requirements and why? Since I don't know if they just all don't meet the requirements or if some are ok, I would like to continue to work and improve on the article starting with the ones that are deemed ok.

Thank you!

The sources in the table match the references in the draft version declined by the most recent reviewer. David notMD (talk) 20:38, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The awards are minor (two refs), and the last four refs are about the software, not the company, hence do not contribute to establish the notability of the company. All in all, this is probably too soon (WP:TOOSOON). David notMD (talk) 20:43, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Ok that makes sense since the last four focus and say more on the product rather than the company.
Initially I saw a draft article someone started on the product Draft:Left Angle Autograph which appeared to have been rejected several times a few months ago and I added edits to it (waiting to see if it gets approved). Do you think these are valid for that product page? Nanou41 (talk) 19:21, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for this! Nanou41 (talk) 19:07, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Draft:Left Angle Autograph was Declined (not Rejected, which is a more severe action) for the reasons given. Given the newness of the company and its software, the references in both drafts do not appear to meet Wikipedia criteria as set out in WP:42. David notMD (talk) 14:53, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What, if any, is your personal connection to Left Angle? David notMD (talk) 15:03, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m a motion designer looking for a new software to use and came across a comment mentioning this company I had never heard of. Then I looked it up and liked what I saw but while looking it up I noticed it didn’t have any wikipedia page (except the product page but I’m still learning about it) so I made this one. Our industry is a bit of a mess right now for several reasons (among which the government is actually suing the company who’s software I use atm) and a lot of motion designers are looking into options so I want to make sure we have access to any information that can help us find tools. Nanou41 (talk) 16:47, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah sorry, “declined” is the word I meant to write.
Ok. In that case, I think it would be very helpful if Wikipedia also added a “minimum time in existence” or a “minimum times mentioned publicly” condition to their guidelines because it would be a lot easier to understand their reasoning. There is a big difference imo between a source not meeting requirements in itself (reliable, independent, in-depth, secondary) and a page being declined simply because they want the company to be mentioned more in general. Nanou41 (talk) 16:46, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lyrics in article[edit]

Are lyrics allowed in song articles? I know a guide to line dancing songs such as Cha Cha Slide is not allowed as Wikipedia isn't a guide. Cwater1 (talk) 21:00, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Generally not, as they are copyrighted. More information is available at MOS:LYRICS and WP:LYRICS. Some portions can be used for analysis and illustrating specific points, but not the whole song. LizardJr8 (talk) 21:37, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, I see, makes sense. We don't want to do something unauthorized. Thanks for the help. I was wondering. Cwater1 (talk) 22:10, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes[edit]

How can I put infoboxes on my draft? Can I even? An answer to this would be very helpful thank you! WikiPhil012 (talk) 22:24, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Click on "Insert" button. From there, a dropdown menu will appear. Then click on "Templates". You will be asked to enter the name of the template. Here is an article about templates that I think will be useful to you on deciding which info box is best for your draft that you are currently writing on: Wikipedia:Templates. Soafy234 (talk) 22:57, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively: Find an article on a similar subject, WikiPhil012. (If your draft is about a soccer player, find an article about a soccer player. Et cetera.) Act as if about to edit its source. Copy the relevant infobox. Cancel the edit. Paste the infobox into your draft. Edit the content of the infobox. Note that addition of an infobox helps neither to demonstrate the notability of the subject of your draft nor to show that the draft merits promotion to article status. -- Hoary (talk) 23:02, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks you for the help. You both made my Wikipedia experience better. WikiPhil012 (talk) 23:28, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

NPP or page review request[edit]

Hello, I just spent some time working on this page, about a notable (but sadly deceased subject) and wanted to ask if any NPP's are online to review it? Here is the page: Michael Lehrer

If the page is not ready, feel free to draftify and I will submit as an AfC. If it seems good, asking for this to be reviewed and indexed as the subject is a quite notable and prolific individual in comedy and ALS history.

Thanks (sorry if this isn't the place to post this) Comintell (talk) 00:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IP blocks technical question[edit]

I was editing on en.Wikipedia today and used my iPad tethered to my iPhone via Blue tooth. I could edit with my iPhone but not with my iPad, getting the message, ~ ip blocked as anonymizing relay. Was it a config error on my part? Back at home, no problem with either device connected to my LAN with persistent IP address. Thanks for any answers or other direction to help. — Neonorange (talk to Phil) (he, they) 00:51, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Neonorange: Might be due to " iCloud Private Relay" Wikipedia:Open_proxies RudolfRed (talk) 02:09, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That may not apply. I just saw you mention bluetooth connection. RudolfRed (talk) 02:22, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
RudolfRed thank you for replying—so quickly and on the nose. According to the message; probably some mistake on my part—there was an open proxy guest account at the location. I can not see any real reason for editing being possible on the iPhone and not on the tethered iPad.

I think you've misread it. It says that her mother moved to the USA in 1958. Valenciano (talk) 06:09, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe that sentence could be made clearer, it is obvious when you read it in context of that paragraph but if you got there by, for instance, searching in-article for the word 'India' then you might not realise that it's not talking about Harris. Sentences getting pulled out of context is a pretty common issue, like it or not. -- D'n'B-t -- 11:22, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Aragonese isn't spanish[edit]

The @ was first used in Aragon, in an aragonese text (the Taula de Ariza). Not in spanish, aragonese, yet it was discriminated against by JMF, who belives Aragonese to be a simple dialect of Spanish.

At sign this is the page where it is wrongly claimed the Taula de Ariza is spanish and here User talk:JJBBSS 02 is where JMF discriminates against Aragonese. JJBBSS 02 (talk) 09:23, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The current edition of the article appears to correctly identify the document as having been written in Aragonese. This appears to be a content dispute over the "has commonly been used in X,Y,Z", where JMF is not suggesting that the terms are interchangeable but that Spanish deserves the weight in that sentence, which I'd concur with. Its not so much about leaving in Aragonese, but that leaving out Spanish would be an odd choice. -- D'n'B-t -- 09:56, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Recent contributions have been undone because they did not appear constructive?[edit]

Hi there,

I would like to find out why I'm getting this message?

"Hello, I'm TornadoLGS. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Bill Gibson (music producer) have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse or the Help desk. Thanks. TornadoLGS (talk) 17:57, 3 June 2024 (UTC)"

I was hoping to place me entire history of my old life and new life in JESUS CHRIST on Wikipedia but I cant seem to find the right way of marking it up.

- Human genealogy project - Christian Life to give hope in Jesus Christ - The LORD has really put on my heart to write this article, what must I do to better write the article (tools etc.)?

And for the record Wikipedia has zero interest in your "entire history of my old life and new life in JESUS CHRIST" UNLESS it has been reported on with significant coverage in multiple reliable independent sources. Theroadislong (talk) 10:08, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the set of your edits that, as TornadoLGS said (with remarkable understatement), "did not appear constructive". What must you do "to better write the article" presenting the "entire history of [your] old life and new life in JESUS CHRIST"? First step: Find some other website for the purpose. -- Hoary (talk) 11:51, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since I was pinged here, I reverted the edit because it seemed to be a partial hijacking of the article. That is, you were changing to content to be about a different person of the same name. However, I went with a milder warning because you had only, thus far, changed a small part of the article. If you are notable, then the content would need to go under a separate article. But if your only intention is to write about your personal religious journey, it's pretty close to certain that you aren't notable and Wikipedia is not a place to write your autobiography. Take a look at the link in the comment above for more suitable places to share your story. TornadoLGS (talk) 21:00, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Analysis and Improvement Suggestions for Wikipedia Draft on Shri Dharm Paul[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Kunal Masson, and I am working on creating a Wikipedia article about Shri Dharm Paul. He was a notable figure who passed away in 1990, and unfortunately, there is limited information and references about him available on the internet. I have drafted an article based on the available information, but I am seeking your assistance to review the draft and provide feedback on any mistakes or areas that need improvement. As I aim to adhere to Wikipedia's guidelines and standards, your expert advice will be invaluable. Given the scarcity of online references, I have relied on printed materials and personal accounts to compile the draft. I understand the importance of verifiability and reliable sources on Wikipedia and would appreciate any suggestions on how to better source the information or improve the article's credibility. Please find the draft attached to this email for your review. Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I look forward to your feedback and suggestions.

Best regards,

Kunal Masson

@Kunalmasson: Please be patient. Articles for Creation's reviewers will get to it when they can. That being said, you will have to find independent, reliable sources to support information in your draft. Print sources are fine, but personal accounts are not going to help you establish notability. If there aren't enough reliable sources about Shri Dharm Paul, then he may not be notable enough for a Wikipedia article about him. Please see the first decline reason in the draft. So that all suffering and destitute people can experience their sorrow and deprivation and help them with compassion and love. When a true and selfless resolution arises in the mind of a person and he discharges that resolution with full faith and discipline, then this mission becomes a manifestation of God Himself and God Himself takes charge of this work. The continuous growth and development of Sunshine Charity Trust is a living proof of this. According to which reliable source? -- Hoary (talk) 11:54, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kunalmasson: you asked this at the AfC help desk, and I answered. You then came here to ask the same question. And then you went back to the AfC help desk to ask the same again. Generally it would be preferred if you asked only at one venue, and read the reply before asking again. This would enable us to provide help more efficiently and without duplicating efforts. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 13:09, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New page not allowing me to submit[edit]

Hello,

I have spent a few days editing a page I am planning to submit on behalf of a nonprofit I am working with. However, when I pressed the publish button I received this message: No stashed content found for 0/5b8aef10-37da-11ef-9430-cbf7fca7eb8e

What can I do to fix this? Thank you SulerLu (talk) 14:44, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @SulerLu, welcome to the Teahouse. That error tends to pop up when the Visual Editor is left open for too long. You can try copying your content elsewhere, either into a text editor on your device or into Visual Editor in a separate browser tab, so that your work isn't lost. Then be sure to "save" often, rather than editing in one long continuous session. 57.140.16.8 (talk) 14:58, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you I was able to copy it into another browser tab and resubmit it for review. SulerLu (talk) 15:21, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming an article based on product name change[edit]

I'm not familiar with the guidelines on renaming an article based on product name change. This has come up at Ecolego from (paid, pending disclosure) editor Boriswe. Can anyone just rename it? How to find DYK "new" articles?[edit]

I've always wanted to put an article in the Do you Know section, but I have no idea how to find eligible articles. The criteria is very strict: in the past week, the article has to either have been expanded five-fold, been created, or nominated to good article status.

What is an easy way to find a "new" article I find interest in to nominate for DYK? Coulomb1 (talk) 15:51, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominators are usually people who have created or improved articles that they are nominating. ⇌ Jake Wartenberg 15:57, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Coulomb1 New pages are logged at Special:NewPages. Some won't survive the new pages patrol but you should be able to find lots that will. As advised, it would be unusual to nominate one yourself but you could certainly ask its main author on their Talk Page whether they had thought of doing so and offer help. Suggesting a good "hook" would be a useful contribution, for example. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:18, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Use of a self-published newsletter for proof of affiliation?[edit]

On the page regarding the activist Carlos Fernandes, I used the newsletter from the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA) to prove he had affiliation with that organization. Is this use of a self-published source ok? I figured a source from the organization itself would be able to support whether or not he had any affiliation with them. On the identifying self-published works page it says "A self-published work may be used as a source when the statement concerns the source itself." Would that be applicable in this situation? Thanks. Urchincrawler (talk) 17:00, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Urchincrawler. I would say no. Including such an affiliation in Carlos Fernandes is not primarily a statement about the source but about Fernandes, and in my few should be included only if it is supported by an independent source. ColinFine (talk) 23:24, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thanks. Urchincrawler (talk) 15:54, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You may also be interested to know that your idea is not really new; using a clock as a source of random numbers is a well-known technique, but is rarely used in cryptographic applications because it produces very poor quality random numbers. The output of a clock is pretty predictable except for a small number of bits at the low end. See our article Random number generation which says "They are often initialized using a computer's real-time clock as the seed, since such a clock is 64 bit and measures in nanoseconds, far beyond the person's precision. These functions may provide enough randomness for certain tasks (for example video games) but are unsuitable where high-quality randomness is required, such as in cryptography applications, or statistics." CodeTalker (talk) 16:34, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point. You have not seen the output and you have already JUDGED this as nothing! If you want to see the supporting data email me. Cannot be a impartial judge of 'new knowledge' until you study the data. It is easy to say something but years of work to understand real random numbers.
Thanks for your comment.

@Kdammers Please see WP:ALUMNI for the policy. Shantavira|feed me 08:31, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But WP:ALUMNI is about articles about secondary schools, not tertiary ed. -- Hoary (talk) 11:08, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Does it specifically say that? I can only see "school" which also applies to colleges and universities in the US, and some teaching universities or colleges in the UK and elsewhere. Bazza 7 (talk) 12:33, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article advice. Take a look at the very first paragraph of that page. (What's written elsewhere about tertiary education may for all I know be the same. Perhaps I should check, but I plead laziness.) -- Hoary (talk) 12:44, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Thanks. I've heard "alumni" or "alumnae" (here in the UK) applied to universities and colleges (e.g. [3]); the more recent trend for secondary schools or their equivalent to use it is inconsistent and less common. Bazza 7 (talk) 12:56, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it appears wikipedia is one project from what I'm reading. How do you explain why its a 'separate project with zero relation' simply based on language difference? Pretty bullshit answer Qcne. 2600:1700:5661:3810:5834:66AC:5413:F3DB (talk) 14:33, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't make personal attacks. Different Wikipedias, while largely similar, operate independently, despite all being owned by the Wikimedia Foundation. Most editors who edit here have never made a single edit on Wikipedias in other languages. User:CanonNi (talkcontribs) 14:36, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And you know that donation banner hits every fucking language. ROFL. 2600:1700:5661:3810:5834:66AC:5413:F3DB (talk) 14:34, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lyrics[edit]

Hi!

I want to add lyrics in Dayar-e-shauq mera, but due to copyright issue, I can't. can anyone help me with this issue? Youknow? (talk) 13:12, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Short of all of us getting elected to our various national legislative bodies and changing the copyright laws, I'm not sure how we can do that. Uporządnicki (talk) 13:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Watervliet[edit]

At this page, under “history” where the paragraph starts “As of February 2020…” there’s information about the police chiefs. I tried to add a page “Joseph L Centanni” that which would be a clickable link with additional information. I tried to use the tutorial to add it but it didn’t work. That said, I tried to link to the page but it still is not a “clean” look. Can you give me advice on how to fix it?

) TY!

Hello, Dcent0514. We do not currently have an article on Joseph L. Centanni, so you cannot add a Wikilink to it. If you believe that Centanni meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, so that there could be an article written about him, then you may add a Wikilink looking like Joseph L. Centanni, which will display as Joseph L. Centanni - a redlink indicating that its destination does not currently exist.
If you mean a link to an external source, then no, we do not put external links in the text of an article. They may sometimes be added to an "external links" section at the end of an article, but there are restrictions on what links may be added, and it would not normally include information about a police chief.
