The purpose of this discussion page is to select 50,000 topics for which Wikipedia should have high-quality articles.

Any article currently on this list may be challenged. The discussion is open to the following rules:

  1. Before being closed, a Level 5 proposal must:
    1. Run for at least 15 days; AND
    2. Allow at least 7 days after the most recent vote; AND
    3. Have at least 4 participants.
  2. For a proposal to be implemented on the Level 5 list:
    1. It must have over 60% support (see table); AND
    2. It must have at least 4 support votes !votes.
  3. For proposed additions from August 2024 onwards, the nominator should list (and possibly link to) at least one potential section in the level 5 vital articles list for the article to be added to. Supporters can also help in this regard.

Add emerging/futurism concepts (remaining nominations)

A bit sf-y, but discussed in science. The articles we have are generally about science, not sf treatment of those (fiction is generally relegated to seprate articles).   • I think this fits in OK with other articles already listed. Although it is an educated guess, the concept is very likely going to happen in the future, and it's not exceptionally theoretical, like other concepts. We list time travel at lev 4 and at lev 5 we list space colonization and worm hole, the latter theoretical like time travel, and the former is possible, just difficult and not quite here yet unless you count the space stations. Asteroid mining will probably be significant in the not too distant future, and regardless of when and if it ever happens I'm sure the concept will be written and read about, studied and discussed a bit. Even if we still aren't doing it in 50 years, that argument hasn't stopped us listing time travel, worm hole or space colonization.  Carlwev  13:36, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure of this one. We do list animal welfare at level 4 in fact. The suggestion here is that this animal would "symbolize" or "represent" animal ethics. But we do not yet list animal ethics, and we also do not list animal rights either, which could be a much more obvious addition. Add Centrosome

Move online services to all in one pages

I noticed that Apple and Microsoft are on a different page than Google, Amazon, and Facebook. I don’t think it makes sense to list several websites and companies on two different pages. I don't think we need to list companies and websites on the same page. I moved webpages back to where they were, but I did leave the IT companies with the rest in Economics. I also think that we should have a structure: something like Meta Platforms and Alphabet Inc.  5 in Economics and Facebook  4 and Google  4 in technology. Clopen sets are really not an very important concept. They matter basically only insofar a connected space is defined to be a set with no nontrivial clopens. There are many pairs of articles about a branch of math and its object of study, such as Riemannian geometry and Riemannian manifold, Group theory and Group (mathematics), Graph theory and Graph (discrete mathematics), and Ring theory and Ring (mathematics). Of these, Riemannian manifold is uniquely discordant with the rating of its companion, which is Level 4 vital. In fact, it is the only article I have listed that is not Level 4 vital. I'm not super confident about this one succeeding, since it's not one of the best-selling cars of all time, and we already have a Ford car listed (Ford Model T  5), but it's arguably the most iconic and best selling sports car of all time, and is also a iconic brand, especially in the United States. Defunct API that was replaced by OpenGL  5, DirectX  5, and the alikes. This was a proprietary API for 3dfx's graphic cards. Sure it ruled at a point, but it was a very short period: according to the 3dfx article they were mainly prominent in the late 1990s to 2000. We don't even list the company, 3dfx. Its rapid declined and became superfluous. Later bought by Nvidia  5 in 2000. The API was not useful other than being proprietary.

So, I created it by machine-translation from its Spanish counterpart and expected it to be picked up by experts who would run with it. This didn't happen. I have no formal scientific or academic education beyond mandatory schooling, and I am out of my depth. Add Passive smoking

Smoking is in the 1000 list. The 10'000 list contains cigarette, tobacco, health effects of tobacco, and smoking cessation, (the last up for removal from level 4). Passive smoking I would expect to be at least level 5, 50,000 material separate from the other articles at higher levels. I believe it would be of interest to general readers and experts, across several areas, such as health, social, law for example. The WHO estimates passive smoking kills 1.3 million people per year, seams very significant.

Adding Common drugs and reorganizing some

The World Health Organization lists several "Essential Medicines" in their document here. Many are not included in the list. Furthermore, several common drugs are also not included. Yes, so I went through the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and spot checked a few medicines. I believe everything on this list should be included on Vital, and wanted to get the ball rolling. I started with medicines that were psychiatric because that seemed to be thinner. Ultimately, I would like to go through the list systematically and add all the UN essential medicines, but this is a start as it could get overwhelming otherwise. Furthermore, I think that some of the "recreational drugs" should be recategorized. If the drug has a recognized medicinal use, then it should not be there. Failing to do so adds unnecessary stigma to people who are taking the medicine for a medical reason. These include:
