The main chain of the Carnic Alps is a subgroup of the Southern Alps within the Eastern Alps. It runs through the Austrian states of (East) Tyrol and Carinthia as well as the Italian provinces of South Tyrol/Alto Adige, Belluno and Udine (Friuli).

The boundary for the region is based on the definition of the Southern Alps and its subdivisions into individual mountain groups as part of the Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps. Within that the main chain of the Carnic Alps is bounded by the following line: Innichen – the Drava river to its confluence with the Gailbach – GailbachKartitsch SaddleGail to its confluence with the GailitzTarvisioKanaltalPontebba – Frattengraben – Forca Pradulina – Rio Turrico – Paularo – Ligosullo – Paluzza – Val Calda – Comeglians – Deganotal (Canale di Gorto) – Forni Avoltri – SappadaPiave – San Stefano di Cadore – Padolatal – Kreuzbergpass – Innichen[1].
