Alan Murín, known as Alan Murin, previously performing under the pseudonym Sane [pronounced: seɪn] (* October 23, 1998, Bratislava, Slovakia) is a Slovak singer, composer, music producer and sound engineer. He has been active on the Slovak music scene since 2019, when he presented himself with his debut EP trilogy – 15 23, 23 10 and 19 98. In the same year, the singer Tina approached him about collaboration, after she discovered one of his first hits "Vypínam",[1] which received a significant response. [2] Tina called it one of the most important songs on the Slovak music scene. [1] This success was followed by several singles, with which he gained the attention of a wider audience and gradually established himself as a prominent figure on the Slovak music scene with his musical ambition. In a relatively short career, he not only gained a wide fan base[3], but also received recognition for his original musical style, talent and creative approach from the artistic community,[2][4] which opened the door to collaborations with several internationally recognized artists and producers. He has collaborated with interprets such as Kali, Rytmus, Ego, Separ, Majk Spirit, Tina, Pil C, Celeste Buckingham, Dominika Mirgová, ADiss, Momo, or the band Moja Reč. He also collaborated with foreign artists such as Raunii, IOVA and Serban Cazan. His long-awaited debut album Trueself, on which he collaborated with several Slovak artists, was released in 2022. The album was a success at the domestic level, when it debuted at the top of the Slovak albums chart of the Czech National Music Institute IFPI.[5] In the same year, he won three awards at the Ruka Hore Awards and his debut took 2nd place in the Album of the Year category.[6] In addition, he released four EPs. Among his biggest hits are the songs "Do Rúk", "Raz Dva Tri", "Dokola" and "Prepáč". He is actively involved in music engineering and production, while also writing his own song lyrics. It has productions in Great Britain, the USA, the Czech Republic and Romania.[7] He produced songs for Dominika Mirgová, for example.

His music videos on YouTube often occupy the top ranks of the Slovak YouTube trending chart. It first reached its peak with the music video for the single "Prepáč"[8] within hours of its release. He maintained this lead for several weeks.[9] He dominated the YouTube trending chart again with the duet "Do Rúk" with Tina, even without a music video for the song.[10] Thanks to the huge response, a music video was created for it, which is still the most watched music video of the singer's own work on the platform with more than 6.9 million views.[11] The hit "Raz Dva Tri" succeeded to go trending on Slovak Youtube as his third one.[12] Alan Murin's YouTube channel has more than 46 million views to date.

Alan Murin is known for his distinctive interpretation, authenticity and directness.[13] His musical style and sound are influenced by a wide variety of musical genres, including pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic music.[14] He himself classifies his work as New Pop, which, however, is based on a long-standing affection for rap.[15] He has a distinctive style that combines modern sounds with honest lyrics, often exploring themes of love and personal experience. In addition to a very specific sound quality, his asset is his musical education.[15] After two years of intensive work in the Slovak music industry, he became one of the most active Slovak performers.[16] In a relatively short career, he has been able to put out more than forty music videos and was a guest on another fifteen.

Music career

[edit]

1998 – 2019: Early life and musical journey

[edit]

Alan Murín was born and raised in Bratislava. Although he does not come from an artistic family, his passion for music was evident already at a young age.[17] He was greatly influenced by his sister, who played him various foreign music that he had never heard before. It wasn't until the end of high school that he realized that he wanted to pursue music professionally.[18] He bought a microphone, learned to work with various computer programs for creating music, and began to create lyrics and melodies that he put into demo songs. He started releasing them already in 2017 under the pseudonym "Sane" on the SoundCloud platform.[17]

After high school, he attended the University of Management in Bratislava for a year. However, he was constantly creating music and looking for various instructions and inspirations on the Internet, which led him to an offer to study abroad. He spontaneously decided to apply to study sound engineering and music production at the Point Blank Music School in London, where he was successfully accepted.[19]

Part of his life's journey was also work in a store selling bicycles and building materials, as a bartender or barber.[20]

2019-2020: Early career and EP trilogy

[edit]

In addition to studying in London, he started building his musical career in Slovakia. He bet on authenticity and started using his civil name as his artist's name. In June 2019, he founded the Trueself Records label and a month later signed a contract with Universal Music in Slovakia. He introduced himself to the music scene with his debut trio of genre-conceptual EPs (15 23, 23 10 and 19 98), which he gradually revealed as chapters. The names of the individual EPs represent the actual time, date and year of Alan's birth. Each of them contains three songs. All songs on the EP were produced together with him by producer from Scotland Charlie Leslie during the singer's studies in London.[21]

He released his debut EP called 15 23 in July 2019, which he sees as the beginning of his musical career.[22] The symbolism is even in the timing of the release itself, as it was officially released on July 23 at 3:23 p.m. (15:23 in 24-hour format). The EP can be characterized as New Pop, but it is heavily influenced by hip-hop. There are also songs on it that intertwine a wide range of different genres, such as pop, hip-hop, RnB, soul, DnB, dubstep, EDM or rock.[23] The debut single "Sám Sebou" released in July had a successful start. A simple, authentic video clip with footage from the streets of Bratislava and London was shot to accompany it. In August, he presented the single "Vypínam" from the EP, in which he also confesses what family and home mean to him.[24] The release of the debut project, in comparison with many other up-and-coming artists, enjoyed great success. Each song received tens of thousands of views on YouTube and streaming services.[25]

In September, a second EP followed with the title, in which he mainly discusses the love of life and relationships.[26] It is conceptually prepared in such a way that it brings the listener closer to his story from beginning to end. This time too, it is presented in different genres.[27] Along with the EP, a music video for the song Život was released, which captures the beauty in the simplicity of life.[28]

Even before the release of the third EP, on November 21, he performed live for the first time as the opening act of the Czech band Mirai at their concert in Bratislava.

In December, he closed his debut trilogy with a final EP called 19 98.[29][30]

In April 2020, the music video to the 2019 breakthrough single "Vypínam" from the first EP was released.[31] He decided to do so because this song gained the greatest favor and interest from the fans out of the entire trilogy of EP recordings. [32] At the time, the song reached a total of more than 500,000 streams, and as a response to this a video clip was created. In May, the music video for the song "SR C" from the last part of the trilogy was released.

Thanks to three released EPs, the young musician presented nine songs in four months, which would be enough for a studio album. However, he gained the attention of fans and the media by gradually presenting his songs.[33] Despite the success under Universal Music, through which he released three EPs, seven Slovak and two English singles, he still longed for artistic independence. In July 2020, he left Universal Music and started releasing under his own label.

During 2020, Alan released his first official single called "Telefonát".

2021-2022: Album preparation and stay in the United States

[edit]

London was followed by another important chapter in Alan's musical career. At the beginning of 2022, he decided to explore his career options in the United States of America, specifically in the musically rich environment of Los Angeles. His proactive approach was evident upon his arrival in LA when he decided to reach out to locals directly on the streets. This unconventional way of networking led to more than 30 conversations during the first day. As a result of Alan's determination and initiative, he found himself in the recording studio that same evening.[34] There he established a collaboration with local rapper Raunii, with whom he released the single "AYAY" during his stay in the US.[35] A month later, he released his first reggaeton single - their second joint single "ELEY".[36]

In April 2022, he featured together with singer Laris Diam on the song "Tam kam" by Peter Pann.[37]

2022-2023: Trueself album

[edit]

The expected album was announced in August 2022 by the pilot single "Sorry".[38] The emotional song received a positive response. Four hours after its release, it appeared on the YouTube trends, and after a few hours it reached the top of the charts, where it held the top spot for several weeks.[39] was also ranked 5th in the ČSN IFPI Top 100 digital singles in Slovakia.

On August 26, he performed with his band at the Uprising festival in Bratislava.[40]

On September 22, the official pre-sale of the debut album, which was named Trueself, was launched.[41] He also released a second single titled "Lifestyle" on the same date.[42] In October, he followed the reggaeton single "Raz Dva Tri", on which he collaborated with Kali.[43] The track was produced by Peter Pann.[44] The main role in the music video was played by model Viki Frajková.[45] The music video went to the top of the YouTube trends almost immediately.[46] The single was also immediately picked up by the radios. It ranked 26th in the ČSN IFPI Top 50 Slovak radio singles list.

The album Trueself saw its physical release on CD on October 22, 2022. It was released in digital distribution a week later, on November 4. It was released under his own label with the same name TRUESELF RECORDS.[47] For the first time in his career, he decided to invite other artists to be featured on his album, which contains 14 original songs. The debut contains collaborations with several Slovak performers, including Rytmus, Separ, Ego, Kali, Celeste Buckingham and Tina.[48] The songs on the album are "sonically very connected", but there are also songs in which the singer is presented "in a completely new position", so much so that even his closest collaborators did not recognize him in some songs. With the release of the album, Alan announced plans to gradually release a music video for each song of the album.[49]

At the end of October, the single "Vamos Bombas" followed, on which Rytmus is featured. The song was produced by Call Me G. The music video, which was created during the three months of the concert season, quickly became trending on YouTube. In November, the music videos for the songs "Suave" and "1000 Poems" were released, on which Laris Diam was featured. In December, the visual for the duet "Do Rúk" with Tina was released, which met with great success. The song topped the YouTube trending charts even without having a music video.[50] In 2023, the single was also released on CD.

In March 2023, he released the song "Cesta je cieľ", which was created in collaboration with the French producer and YouTuber Ysos, who, as part of his concept, is looking for random artists in the world to contact and offer them a joint song. After choosing Slovakia, he found Alan through the TOP 50 artists in streaming on Spotify.[51]

The album launch of Trueself took place on March 22, 2023 at the Nibble & sip house in the Zichy Palace in Bratislava.[52]

In May, he appeared on two collaborations on Kali's album Banan in the songs "Srdce ako z kameňa" and "Kým ťa mám".

In December, he featured on the dance song "Sóda" by the frontman of the group Medial Banana Pokyman.[53]

2024: A new era of sound and EP Love Is Cool

[edit]

In February 2024, he released his first international single "Still Love You", on which he collaborated with the Romanian singer Iova and the renowned Romanian producer Serban Cazan.[54] The single found its place not only on Slovak and Czech radio stations, but also on radio stations in Belgium, Canada and Romania. This year's second single is also a career milestone for the singer. Released in March, the single "Dokola" represents a new era of sound in Alan's music production. According to the singer, it is, so to speak, the dividing line between the work before this song and after this song. Currently, he started working with genres that he did not work with in the past and pays more attention to production.[55]

He appeared as a guest on Kali's and Peter Pann's Retrostar Tour. The tour was preceded by the joint single "Mám ťa rád", which they premiered together in Bratislava.[56]

The singles "Povedz Prečo", "Animal Style" and "Srdcom Buran" followed. His new EP Láska Je Cool was released in June. In September, he released the latest single "Domov".[57]
