Aleu Garang Aleu Kuek was born in Bor, Southern Sudan. He spent over twenty years in Uganda as a refugee due to the civil war that began in 1983. Despite these challenging circumstances, he was fortunate to attend school and complete his studies. Aleu is deeply engaged in academia and aspires to remain in this field for life. He has taught for at least ten years at the University of Juba and is a researcher specializing in peacebuilding and borderland dynamics. He has conducted various consultancies with NGOs in South Sudan. Aleu holds an MA and a PhD from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the School of Community Studies and Rural Development at the University of Juba. In recent years, he had also taken on an administrative role as the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science within the same school and later as Head of Department of Community Studies. He is currently the Dean of School of Community Studies and Rural Development, University of Juba. Before venturing into the world of academia, Aleu Garang once worked as Spokesman for Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau, a body that was established to conduct Referendum for South Sudanese to exercise their rights to self-determination in 2011.During referendum, South Sudanese overwelmingly voted for their Independence in 2011. Dr. Aleu holds a political conviction; he believes in the broader integration of the East African Community. He stood to become Member of the East African Assembly in 2022 but lost.
