The Balkan Physical Union (BPU) is non-governmental, non profit scientific organization formally established in Nov 1985, currently including the National Physics Societies from 10 countries: Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Moldova, Montenegro, North-Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. All these countries are at the same time members of the European Physical Society (EPS), a larger organization with 42 member societies, with which BPU has a close collaboration.

History

[edit]

The idea of founding the BPU was proposed by Prof A. Milojevic (Yugoslavia) and Prof. I Ursu (Romania) at the VIII Congress of the Union of Yugoslav Societies of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers (UYSMPA), held in Pristina (Yugoslavia) in Nov 1985. The first Balkan Physical Union Council meeting was held in Bucharest in 1987, where the first BPU Constitution was adopted, signed at that moment by representatives of the National Physical Society from Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Yugoslavia and, shortly after, from Turkey.

Governance

[edit]

The leading structures of the Union are the BPU Council, the Board of the Directors and the Executive Committee. The BPU Council is the highest decisional forum and it consists in three representatives of each National Society member of BPU. The former BPU Presidents, as well as the Associated and Honorary Members may participate in the meetings without voting rights. The BPU Council meets once every three years, but extraordinary online meetings can be scheduled if necessary. The Board of the Directors is composed of 10 persons, one nominated representative for three years from each National Physical Society. The Executive Committee organizes the whole activity established by the BPU Council and it consists in 5 persons elected from the members of the BPU Board of Directors: the President, the Vice President, the Scientific Secretary, the Executive Secretary, and the Coordinator of International Projects.
