The Carolinian Physics and Astronomy Society (USC PhySoc), formerly named the Carolinian Physics Society, is a student society associated with the Department of Physics of the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines. The Society consists of undergraduate students studying under the Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics program, as well as the alumni of the USC Department of Physics. The Society's mission is to promote scientific literacy and the study of physics among the people of Cebu and beyond. With the hopes of fulfilling such goals, the Society engages in activities aimed at students of the high school and elementary levels, such as competitions and lectures. Aside from the Society's focus on physics, the Carolinian Physics and Astronomy Society is also recognized as one of Cebu's major amateur astronomy clubs, frequently conducting star parties open to the public.
History
[edit]Carolinian Physics Society
[edit]The Department of Physics of the University of San Carlos was founded in 1950, with Fr. Franz Oster, SVD as its first chairman. The community of students that would later be formally recognized as the Carolinian Physics Society began in 1953, when the Department, then chaired by Fr. Michael Richartz, SVD, first offered an undergraduate program that would end in the conferment of a Bachelor of Science in Physics degree. From the opening of the BS Physics program in 1953 to the early 2000s, the population of undergraduate physics students was quite small, with only one to four enrollees per year. Because of the small population of students, the Society first existed as joint student organization with the mathematics undergraduates, as the Mathematics-Physics Society.
