History
[edit]Since 1964, the Department of Numerical Methods existed within the then Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, originating from the Department of General Mathematics led by Stanisław Turski. This name change reflected the emergence of a new field of research and teaching at the University of Warsaw, made possible, among other things, by the university's acquisition of the Dutch GIER computer.
In 1969, when the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics was separated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, the Department of Numerical Methods was simultaneously transformed into an institute, initially called the Institute of Mathematical Machines.
In 1975, the Institute of Mathematical Machines merged with the Faculty's Computing Center, forming the Institute of Informatics. At the same time, the Faculty's name was changed to the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics. The first director of the institute was Stanisław Turski.
Until 1991, the faculty was located in the Palace of Culture and Science, occupying spaces on the 7th to 9th floors. The building at Banacha Street 2 was previously home to the Felix Dzerzhinsky Military Political Academy until 1990.
