Tylor BD: The legacy of George Freeth is one that has impacted a countless amount of people, although they are probably unaware of it.
Freeth put out a fire that was starting to grow in California as people’s interest in the ocean grew. He invented the 3-wheeled motorcycle that is the prototype for the type of emergency vehicles seen on the beach today. Freeth introduced new techniques on how to save someone in the water and once you get them out of the water. Most importantly, he saved the lives of so many. It is possible that without the lifeguarding knowledge that George Freeth brought to California, it may not have the same beach culture that it does today.
George Freeth also left his mark in the world of swimming. He participated and won in many swimming competitions held in the California area. But even more than that, he coached one of the most successful swimming teams that the USA has ever seen.
Water polo was not only something that Freeth excelled in, but he also found a great use for it in lifeguard training. His water polo club team excelled in games even though there was a push against it with the AAU. They were dominant. He used his talent in water polo to further improve his lifeguard training.
Furthermore, George Freeth is credited for reviving surfing in California and promoting the ocean and not just the pool. He gave surfing expeditions during his time in Southern California. He won many surfing competitions, pleasing the crowds with his flashy skills.
Although George Freeth is not a household name, we all benefit from the legacy of George Freeth. There may not be a beach culture like there is today if he had not come to California and introduced the Hawaiin culture to us. The ocean would likely be seen as a deadly place to stay away from if he had taught others how to properly lifeguard in the roaring ocean.
