Proclamation

[edit]

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms on the 8th of June 2023.[4] The aim of the proclamation and commemoration is to recognize and address the effects of sand and dust storms globally.[5]

Celebration

[edit]

The day is celebrated on the 12th of July, the date was chosen to highlight the importance of international cooperation in the prevention, management, and mitigation of the phenomena. The first celebration took place in 2023[6]following the General Assembly resolution, focusing on improving early warning systems and the exchange of climate and meteorological information.[7] Initiatives such as those implemented by the United Nations Coalition to Fight Sand and Dust Storms,[8]which facilitates collaboration and the exchange of best practices among affected countries and organizations, have been promoted.[7]
