Kenki Noma (Japanese: 野間 賢樹, Hepburn: Noma Kenki, born May 21 1993[2]), also known as Kenki （Japanese: けんき) is a Japanese streamer, YouTuber and former esports player. The official tagline is "A hilarious creator born from THAT TOWN , Yamashina, Kyoto" (京都のとある街「山科」が生んだ爆笑クリエイター). [2]　Currently, he is affiliated with the CREATOR division of the professional gaming team ZETA DIVISION.[3]

He was nominated for the “eSports Creator of the year 2023” award at the Japan eSports Awards 2023, announced in 2024.[4] The selection of finalists is the result of fan voting.[5]

Early life and career

Kenki was born in Yamashina-ku, Kyoto.[6]

After graduating from Kyoto Sangyo University Senior High School, he enrolled at Kyoto Sangyo University.[7]

In his childhood, he played FPS games, citing GoldenEye 007 (1997 video game) for the Nintendo 64, released by Nintendo, as the first game he played. Later, he also played free-to-play FPS games such as Sudden Attack and Alliance of Valiant Arms (AVA). Notably, AVA is one of the titles he recalls most fondly, as he was deeply engaged with it for nearly two years.[8]

During both high school and university, he worked part-time in the banquet hall at The Westin Miyako Kyoto. Although that hotel typically did not hire high school students, he claim that he was able to secure the position by effectively showcasing his own abilities.[9]

During his university years, he became dedicated to the FPS game Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, released by Ubisoft in 2015. Competing under the team name "Gakkocho" (学校長) or "School Principal", he participated in numerous tournaments, achieving second place in the "JCG Rainbow Six Siege Master presented by GeForce GTX", held in February 2016.[10][11]

In 2016, the professional gaming team Father's Back (ja:父ノ背中) was formed through the merger of "HOME," a multi-gaming team founded by Japanese streamer, YouTuber Teru-shan (てるしゃん)[12], and "Gakkocho," the team he was part of. He served as the vice leader of Father's Back until January 31, 2024.[13][14] While competing as a professional gamer, he also commentated at Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege tournaments.[15] He sometimes gives special classes at Japanese vocational schools as a guest lecturer.[16][17]

In August 2023, he released his first game, Project F[18], a title he personally developed. The development costs, amounting to 100 million yen, were funded from his YouTube earnings.[19] In an interview with EAA!!, a web media outlet focused on shooter games, he stated, "Creating a game has always been my dream."[20]

On February 25, 2024, He joined the professional gaming team ZETA DIVISION,[3] which includes streamers like K4sen(ja:K4sen) and Yuta Seki(ja:関優太)[21]. His addition, alongside fellow streamer Oniya, was officially announced on that date.[3] After joining ZETA DIVISON, he is doing himself to do what he could not do as an e-sports player. He is represented by the “K Summit” (ケーサミット)[22], which he holds regularly. He has held this event three times before November 9, 2024, in which he himself served meals in a kitchen car. The first event featured potato chips[22], and the second, Taiwanese shaved ice[23]. In the third event, beef tendon curry was served at the Red Bull Home Ground 2024 event.[24]

In addition to developing his own games, he also supports users who want to work on game production. He has invited lecturers himself and held a project where he and his audience learned Unreal Engine 4 together[25], and in September 2024, he held a student game contest within the Tokyo Game Show as an extra edition of the aforementioned K Summit.[26] In this contest, he himself evaluated games created by students from high schools and vocational schools throughout Japan.

In 2024, he was nominated for the "eSports Creator of the Year" award at the Japan eSports Awards 2023.[4] However, he expressed a negative view of the award and stated that he does not plan to participate in any form of award ceremonies in the future.[27]

The oldest existing video was uploaded during his university years on his YouTube account "野間賢樹" (Noma Kenki) titled "Minecraft: Redstone Clock Circuit That Activates Only a Specified Number of Times" (マインクラフト　指定した数だけ作動するクロック回路).[28] In 2021, after Bunshun Online reported on his relationship with cosplayer Enako[29], some videos were deleted, but some Minecraft videos are still available on his current YouTube account.[30]

Play style

He describes Rainbow Six Siege as a game where "tactics decide victory" rather than just shooting down enemies quickly, making it a core-oriented title among FPS games. Instead of relying solely on gunplay, he emphasizes the importance of interpreting subtle changes in score and gameplay conditions, as well as understanding the opponent’s perspective. He notes that "figuring out how to deceive the opponent" is a key focus in his tactical approach.[8]

When it comes to play style, he identifies himself as an "intuitive player" rather than one who strictly follows pre-planned strategies. Lacking confidence in his aim, he compensates by employing tricky maneuvers to catch opponents off guard, aiming to dull their reflexes and seize the moment to attack. His guiding principle is "not to maximize my potential, but to prevent the opponent from realizing theirs."[8]

In situations where he falls into the opponent's strategy, he explains that his ultimate countermeasure is engaging in psychological warfare or "reading the opponent." As game meta and strategies continuously evolve, he stresses the importance of analyzing each round to stay adaptive. He notes that even moving a mere ten meters can alter the opponent’s setup and timing, so recognizing and responding to these trends is crucial.[8]

To stay current with in-game trends, he frequently tests ideas that come to mind, even those that might seem counterintuitive. For instance, he looks for overlooked "blind spots"—positions that might appear risky but are effective precisely because they’re outside the opponent's awareness. He carefully times his moves to surprise his opponents, continually refining his approach to find the optimal positioning and timing.[8]

He is also meticulous about his gaming devices; while he previously used a wireless mouse, he currently prefers a wired mouse due to the lighter weight, which he finds enhances his gameplay. Though wireless latency has improved, he found the weight to be a drawback and switched to a wired mouse to ensure optimal performance.[8]
