Klarina Pichler is an international polo player[1], polo club manager, horse-breeder and trainer who was born in the Alps of Austria and lives in the hills of Andalusia.[2]
She has played around the world, from playing on the winning Austrian team in the Snow Polo World Cup 2016,[3] to captaining her own team, Las Sacras Romanas,[4] 'The Holy Romans', in the Ladies Open at Cowdray Park in 2022 until finally being defeated in the semi-finals by world number one, Carina 'Nina' Clarkin, née Vestey.
She founded her own club in the Austrian Alps, before moving on to manage other clubs including the Seville Polo Club La Mata del Herrador, the Leadenham Polo Club in Lincolnshire and she now work on the management team and plays at Iridike-Puente de Hierro, 'Iron Bridge', in Sotogrande.[5]
She is Spain's only Hurlingham Polo Association licensed instructor (overseas) in Spain, and her clients have including the British Armed Forces, coaching the Royal Dragoon Guards and the Royal Air Force teams.[6]
She breeds and trains her own horses from her sire, Elstar,[7] who also plays, reputedly making him the only pure English Thoroughbred stallion playing polo in the world. His entry in The General Stud Book shows him to be a direct descendant of 1964 Kentucky Derby winner and sire of sires, Northern Dancer, and also of 1978 Triple Crown (which includes the Kentucky Derby) winner Affirmed. Elstar's mother was sired by champion sprinter, the last of the Byerley Turk line, Indian Ridge. Elstar's own progeny have gone on to win world class high goal polo tournaments including the Desert Polo in Saudi Arabia.[8]
She is a descendant of Baron Leonhard Pichler von Weitenegg of the old Swabian nobility[9] Lord of Hornstein[10] and Seibersdorf[11] and Councillor of the Court Chamber to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I.[12] She is engaged to be married to author, banker and amateur bullfighter Alexander Fiske-Harrison.[13][14]
