n8n (pronounced "n-eight-n"[3]) is a free and source-available fair-code licensed workflow automation tool. It was created by Jan Oberhauser, and is maintained and further developed by the n8n GmbH based in Berlin, Germany.[4]

The company behind the project received $1.5m in funding by Sequoia Capital and First minute Capital in March 2020[5] and $12m from Felicis Ventures and Harpoon Ventures in April 2021. [6]

The project is with over 37k stars, one of the top 400[7] repositories of over 372 million in total on GitHub, and was 2022 one of the Enterprise Tech 30 companies. [8]

Naming

[edit]

The name n8n is a an abbreviation of nodemation. Counting the eight letters between the first and the last "n". nodemation is a combination of 'node-' because of its Node-View and it being written in Node.js and "-mation" for 'automation'.[3]
