Early Life and Education
Oluwafemi Jimoh Akande was born on 6 August 1971 in Lagos state, Nigeria, to Adebisi Akande.[1] and the late Chief (Mrs) Omowunmi Akande of Ila Orangun, Osun State.
In 2007, Akande established his own legal practice, Oluwafemi Akande & Co., serving as Lead Partner until 2019. Concurrently, he co-founded Milton Nelson & Associates.[2], an audit, tax management, and consultancy firm, where he was Managing Partner until 2019.
Public Service
In 2019, Akande was appointed Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Osun State[4], a position he held until 2022. In 2022, he was appointed as a member of the Osun State Judicial Service Commission[5], serving until 2023.
Notable Contributions
In 2020, Oluwafemi Akande, the Attorney-General of Osun State, played a significant role in the development of the legal framework for Operation Amotekun, a security initiative aimed at combating crime in the Southwest region of Nigeria. Akande, along with his counterparts from the other Southwest states, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos, collaborated to create a standardised operational procedure for the Amotekun Corps. This initiative was designed to complement existing security apparatuses using local intelligence and community policing methods. The legal framework was a pioneering effort to enhance regional security and was subsequently passed into law by the respective state legislatures[6].
Femi Akande announced the discontinuation of the trial against Saheed Akinloye, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. Akinloye was arraigned for allegedly spreading false information regarding the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Oyetola directed the discontinuation on compassionate grounds, despite Akinloye's alleged breach of the state's Infectious Disease Law 2020[7].
Akande played a pivotal role in the release of 11 inmates from the Ilesa and Ife Correctional Centres. This initiative was part of the federal government's efforts to decongest correctional facilities and ensure swift dispensation of justice. The state government, under Akande's supervision, paid the fines necessary for the inmates' release, who had been unable to afford them[8].
As part of Governor Oyetola's industrialization drive, Akande was involved in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Virtueplus Two Integrated Nigeria Limited for the establishment of a bio-refinery in Boripe Local Government. This project is expected to create 15,000 jobs (5,000 direct and 10,000 indirect) and stimulate economic growth in the state[9].
Akande was a member of the committee inaugurated to combat violence against women and children in Osun State. The committee, headed by the governor's wife, Kafayat Oyetola, aimed to provide comprehensive management of gender-related crimes and enhance the protection of women's and children's rights[10].
He was part of the state boundary committee formed to address and amicably resolve boundary disputes within Osun State and with neighbouring states. The committee's approach was to use alternative conflict resolution methods to maintain peace and harmony[11]
Femi Akande's tenure as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice was characterised by significant contributions to legal reforms, social justice, and the overall enhancement of the judicial system in Osun State. His efforts in decongesting correctional facilities, addressing boundary disputes, and protecting the rights of women and children have left a lasting impact on the state's governance and legal landscape[12]
