Ross "Yergz" Yerger

Ross Anthony Yerger (born November 1, 1971), known by the nickname "Yergz", is a former minor league baseball umpire, amateur ice hockey referee, and retired U.S. Secret Service Special Agent.[1][2] He has since become a podcaster and radio talk show host.[3]

Early Life and Education

Yerger grew up in the Boyertown School District in Pennsylvania. He initially lived above his paternal grandfather's barber shop before moving to Colebrookdale Township and later Earl Township.[1]

He attended Colebrookdale Elementary, Boyertown Middle School - West Center, and graduated from Boyertown Senior High School in 1990. Yerger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in Political Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1995.[2]

Sports Officiating Career

Yerger began umpiring Little League Baseball at age 12 and officiating ice hockey at 13.[1] He attended several officiating schools, including:

  • Bruce Hood's International School of Refereeing (1988, 1989)
  • Don Koharski's School of Officiating (1990)
  • Kevin Collins' Western New England Officiating School
  • United States Olympic Training Center, Lake Placid, NY (twice)
  • Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring (1996)[1]He worked as a minor league baseball umpire for two seasons starting in 1996.[1]

U.S. Secret Service Career

On July 17, 2000, Yerger joined the U.S. Secret Service as a Special Agent in the Philadelphia Field Office[1][4]

. His 21-year career included assignments in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles. Notably, he served on Hillary Clinton's protective detail for three years during her first presidential campaign.[1]

Post-Retirement Career

After retiring from the Secret Service in 2021, Yerger became involved in day trading and cryptocurrency investing.[1] He later transitioned into podcasting and radio, hosting shows like "Up The Middle" which discusses politics and current events.[3][5]

Personal Life

Yerger resides in the Tampa area with his son, Zack. He is openly gay and has spoken about his experiences as a gay man in sports officiating and law enforcement.[1][6]
