Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani bin Khalid Al-Thani (born August 31, 1976) is a member of the House of Al Thani ,Qatar's ruling family.[1] He currently serves as the chief executive officer of Qatar Media Corporation (QMC)[2]

Early life and education

Sheikh Abdulaziz was born in Doha, Qatar, to Sheikh Thani bin Khalid Al-Thani and Mrs. Hessa bin Hussein bin Abdullah Alsadah[1]. He graduated in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, majoring in information systems, from the American University in Washington, DC.[3]

Prior to his role in media, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani bin Khalid Al Thani served as the head of Qatar Petroleum (Now Qatar Energy)'s recruitment department between 2006 and 2012.[3][4]

In 2012, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani bin Khalid Al Thani was named Assistant Director of Qatar TV [4][5]. By 2013, he had advanced to the position of Director [4][5].

Qatar Media Corporation

Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani bin Khalid Al Thani was appointed as the CEO for Qatar Media Corporation (QMC) by an Amiri resolution issued by the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on October 20, 2021. This decision was implemented and enforced from the date of issuance and was published in the Official Gazette[2][6] [7] .

Pre-World Cup 2022

As the newly appointed CEO of Qatar Media Corporation (QMC), he has been actively involved in promoting innovation within the media sector. He has emphasised the importance of media as both a message and content[8], focusing on its critical role in community development. Under his leadership, QMC has worked towards enhancing its digital presence and improving the quality of its media outputs to reflect Qatar's culture and values. This approach aligns with the broader goals of fostering innovation and leveraging media's influence to contribute to societal development. [9] During his leadership QMC won three awards at the Gulf Radio and Television Festival [10] To ensuring comprehensive media coverage of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani Al Thani, along with the chairman of QMC, began preparations by hosting the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the GCC information ministers at Lusail Cultural Village.[11].They coordinated efforts to strategize and optimize media coverage for the event.

Subsequently, Sheikh Abdulaziz led the planning and execution of media coverage for the World Cup, focusing on producing World Cup related radio and television programs for both traditional and digital platforms.[12][13]. Following the event, Sheikh Abdulaziz stated that the World Cup had received distinguished media coverage, reflecting the success of the coordinated efforts and advanced planning by QMC.[14] [15].

Post-World Cup 2022

immediately after the wrold cup, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani Al Thani endorsed a QMC initiative aimed at training content creators. He is a strong proponent of this effort, viewing it as a vital opportunity for Qatari media to continually advance and remain in sync with contemporary trends.[16] He emphasises the importance of enhancing the capabilities of QMC staff to meet the evolving demands of the media industry. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote innovation and adaptability within the organization, ensuring that QMC remains competitive and capable of producing high-quality content with training programs designed to improve both technical skills and strategic thinking.[17][18]

Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani Al Thani advocates for increased cooperation among Arab nations and countries globally, including China. In November 2023, he met with the Chinese embassy's chargé d'affaires as part of preparations for the QMC delegation's participation in the Arab-Chinese Forum for Radio and Television.[19]

In 2024 Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani Al Thani efforts were focused on strengthening Gulf cooperation at the media level through the 8th meeting of GCC media training officials held by QMC.[20].

On the academic and political levels, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Thani Al Thani has engaged in various initiatives, including signing a memorandum of understanding between QMC and the University of Doha for Science and Technology in February 2024[21][22][23], chairing a meeting of Undersecretaries of GCC Information Ministries hosted by Qatar in March 2024[24][25] , and discussing a joint action plan with Qatar University in May 2024[26].
