Tharupathi Munasinghe (born 1975) is a Sri Lankan ethnomusicologist, composer, and academic. He is known for his significant contributions to the fields of sound design, ethnomusicology, and the study of cultural identity through music. Munasinghe is currently affiliated with the University of Melbourne[1], where he serves as a sessional academic and research assistant in the School of Culture and Communication[2]. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the ‘BUNKA’ Japan Sri Lanka Friendship Cultural Award for promoting cultural exchange between Japan and Sri Lanka[3].
Early years
[edit]Munasinghe was born into a musically inclined family; his father, Austin Munasinghe[4], was a pioneering musicologist who made substantial contributions to Sri Lankan music, including cinema, stage plays, and television dramas[5]. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future career. In addition to his academic pursuits, Munasinghe has composed music for various films and television series, and authored several books on sound and music[1].
