From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Uncured is an American progressive metal band formed in New York City in 2016. The band is known for their innovative blend of progressive metal, alternative metal, and nu-metal elements, a style they have described as "Nu Metalcore." Uncured has been recognized for their technical proficiency, intricate compositions, and high-energy performances, quickly gaining a strong following in the metal scene.[1]

History

[edit]

Uncured was founded by brothers Rex Cox and Zak Cox, both accomplished multi-instrumentalists. The band began as a creative outlet for the brothers to explore complex musical arrangements that combined elements of progressive metal, nu-metal, and metalcore. Drawing from a wide range of influences, Uncured quickly developed a unique sound that set them apart from their contemporaries.[2]

In 2017, Uncured released their debut album, Medusa, which was met with critical acclaim for its technical musicianship and innovative songwriting.[3] The album featured a mix of complex guitar solos, dynamic drumming, and a blend of harsh and clean vocals, establishing Uncured as a fresh voice in the metal scene. Following the release of Medusa, Uncured embarked on a series of tours across North America and Europe, sharing the stage with bands like DevilDriver, Children of Bodom, and Cradle of Filth.[4]

Uncured's second album, Epidemic, was released in 2019 and showcased a more refined and mature sound. The album maintained the technical elements of their debut while incorporating more melody and groove, reflecting the band's growth as musicians and songwriters.[5] Epidemic further solidified their reputation and earned them a place among the pioneers of the emerging "Nu Metalcore" genre—a style that blends the aggression and complexity of metalcore with the groove and accessibility of nu-metal.[6]

In 2020, Uncured released the My Design EP, continuing to experiment with their sound and pushing the boundaries of the nu-metalcore genre.[4] The band has been described as a driving force in the evolution of modern metal, combining traditional metal elements with contemporary influences to create a sound that is both innovative and accessible.[7]

Musical Style and Influences

[edit]

Uncured's music is characterized by a unique blend of progressive metal, alternative metal, and nu-metalcore. Their sound is distinguished by intricate guitar work, complex time signatures, heavy riffs, and a combination of harsh and melodic vocals. The band's influences range from progressive metal giants like Opeth and Dream Theater to nu-metal bands such as Korn and Slipknot, creating a hybrid style that appeals to a wide audience.[4]

The term "Nu Metalcore" has been used to describe Uncured's music, reflecting their blend of nu-metal's groove-oriented sound with the intensity and complexity of metalcore. This genre fusion is evident in their use of downtuned guitars, syncopated rhythms, and a balance of aggressive and clean vocals, which have become hallmarks of their sound.[6]
