Vertical Aviation International (VAI) is a not-for-profit professional trade association for rotorcraft and vertical industry professionals and member organizations in more than 68 nations. Previously named Helicopter Association International (HAI), the organization rebranded itself in March 2024, expanding its support to include all vertical-flight aircraft. The organization celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023.
VAI is the world’s leading membership association dedicated to the vertical aviation industry, which encompasses all aircraft capable of vertical or short takeoff and landing. By fueling industry growth through connection, advocacy, safety, education, and support for its members’ success, VAI works to leverage the power of vertical flight to strengthen communities worldwide. The association welcomes all facets of the vertical aviation industry, including manufacturers, operators, suppliers and vendors, pilots and maintenance technicians, and other aviation professionals.
Since 1948, VAI/HAI has provided its membership with services that directly benefit their operations and advances the civil helicopter industry by providing programs that enhance safety, encourage professionalism and promote the unique contributions made by helicopters to society, according to its mission statement. Their Salute to Excellence awards are issued annually "for outstanding achievements in the international helicopter community".
VAI produces the industry's largest vertical-flight/rotorcraft annual trade event. Previously called HAI HELI-EXPO, VAI rebranded the show to VERTICON as part of the organizational change. In March 2024, exactly 15,000 exhibitors and attendees from 87 countries participated in the final HELI-EXPO, exploring 625 exhibitor booths and 63 aircraft on the show floor. The inaugural VAI VERTICON is taking place March 10-13 in Dallas, Texas.
