Ignacio Galán in 2020

José Ignacio Sánchez Galán1 (born 1950) better known as Ignacio Galán, is a Spanish businessman who currently serves as executive chairman of Iberdrola, a multinational energy company with a presence in dozens of countries worldwide with subsidiaries including ScottishPower in the United Kingdom, Avangrid in USA, Neoenergia in Brazil, Iberdrola Australia and Iberdrola Mexico. In 2019 he is selected by Harvard Business Review as one of the five most important CEOs in the world.[1][2] while in 2023 Time appointed him as one of the most relevant leaders on fighting against climate change.[3]

Early life

[edit]

Galán was born in 1950 in Salamanca, Spain. As a young man, he moved to Madrid to study industrial engineering at the ICAI School of Engineering attached to Comillas Pontifical University.[4]

Galán also graduated in business administration from the ICADE Business School and in Business Administration [5] and Foreign Trade from the EOI Business School. He speaks English, French, Italian and Portuguese and is married with four children.

Career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Galán's career got under way in 1972 at Sociedad Española del Acumulador Tudor, where he held various executive posts and oversaw the company's international expansion.[6]

In the early 1990s, he managed Industria de Turbopropulsores (ITP)2 since its creation. Initially it was a consortium supported by Rolls-Royce and SENER (a private Spanish engineering and technology group).

Between 1993 and 1995 Ignacio Galán was Chairman of Eurojet, the European consortium for the development and manufacture of the Eurojet EJ2005 engine, which equips the Eurofighter.[7]

In 1995 he joined the newly created Airtel Móvil as CEO. Under his executive direction the company achieved 5 millons customers. Galán left Airtel 2001 after securing its sale to Vodafone for 24,000 million euros, multiplying the initial investment of its founders by 31.[8]

Career at Iberdrola

[edit]

In 2001, Galán was appointed the executive vice-chairman and chief executive of Iberdrola and in 2006 he earned the position of executive chairman at the company.3

In 2007 he was appointed Scottish Power Chairman,[9] once the merge of the Scottish electric company into Iberdrola was completed.[10] Iberdrola had been recognized by former Scotland Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon as an example for decarbonization of Scotland.[11]

Since 2015 he is also Avangrid Chairman.[12] Avangrid is the Iberdrola controlled utility based in the US, as a consequence of the merge of former Iberdrola USA and UIL.[13] Since then, Iberdrola’s presence in the US had been growing as it shows in the last Iberdrola Investor Day, where was announced that the US will be receiving the biggest share (34 per cent) of the huge €36bn total investment in renewables generation and power networks.[14] In 2022 Mr. Galan also had meeting with United States President Joe Biden in order to advance offshore wind power industry in the US, considered a key industry to promote climate resilience.[15]

In an article published in April 2021, The New York Times[16] highlighted Iberdrola as a "leader" in renewables thanks to "the commitment" that Ignacio Galán made to renewables 20 years ago and underlined how since Galán took the reins of the energy company he has had "the mission to change the electricity industry" and that "it was very clear to him that he saw the United States as having enormous potential in renewables".

In October 2020, the Financial Times[17] described Ignacio Galán as "the engineer" who has transformed what was a second-tier Spanish company into the world's third-largest utility since he took the helm in 2001, transforming it from a primarily domestic company with coal, hydroelectric and oil-fired plants into a leader in clean energy, as well as an owner of electricity grids. Its acquisitions in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, the UK and the US have made the group the third largest utility in the world by market value.

In 2022, he announced to the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, an investment of 3 billion euros for his country.[18] It was through Infigen, an Australian company acquired by Iberdrola in 2020. The aim was to provide new capacity for renewable energy, battery storage, green hydrogen projects, and investment in transmission networks.[19]

In 2023, Galan taught the case 'Iberdrola, leading the energy revolution' at Harvard Business School, developed by Professor Juan Alcácer, James J. Hill Professor of Business Administration.[20] The case analyzes its strategy, such as its role in green hydrogen, based on the position taken by the group in renewables, grids and storage.

In 2023, he joined the Global Leaders Council of the UNICEF Generation Unlimited organization.[21]
