September 2012 proposal

[edit]

The wording is currently discussed at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Message on search results page. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:57, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've just added the following text to this message:

To change the namespaces you search in by default, set your search preferences.

This is to aid discoverability of search settings to new users, and follows a suggestion by Quiddity in the ongoing discussion at Buzilla T54817. — Scott talk 09:29, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-searchoptions is about to be removed as far as I can tell from Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Tech News: 2014-23 and gerrit:131727. I don't think we should tell users where to find a feature just before it's moved. It could have been added long ago but it's poor timing to add it now. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:46, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Until it's a physical reality, there is absolutely no harm in educating our users as to how the system currently works. — Scott talk 11:30, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It may be removed around 12 June. We could wait with reverting it until then but many users will probably be confused by no longer having the option in the place they have just been told about for the first time. I think it's better to revert now. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:26, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please undo the last edit. Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-searchoptions has indeed been removed. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:03, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • This really shouldn't have been added, not only it was about to be removed, but this message is shown to all readers, unregistered included. Please don't add registered-only messages to messages displayed to everyone. There's MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new which is only displayed to users able to create pages, so not unregistered users. topicon

[edit]

Please replace this by a topicon like MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-explain. (If there are no objections, this will turn into a protected edit request on 2014-12-12.)    FDMS  4    15:26, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've tested this on testwiki and it looks good. Code used :
<div class="metadata topicon" style="right: 10px; font-size: 95%;">For search options, see [[Help:Searching]].</div>
Cenarium (talk) 20:23, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I thought we could use
<div class="metadata topicon" style="right: 10px; font-size: 95%;">[[Help:Searching]]</div>
, which would also solve the problems described in #September 2012 proposal (archived thread) …    FDMS  4    21:37, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I had kept the same message, but indeed brevity is preferable here, and I can see how people get confused. It may even be best to use the plain and simple Search Help. Cenarium (talk) 03:35, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not keen on "Search Help", as that could be interpreted as a way to search the help pages. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:11, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe. I prefer to avoid non-piped links to project or help pages but in this case I guess we may go with it. Cenarium (talk) 18:47, 12 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've made the edit as suggested by FDMS 4. Cenarium (talk) 06:44, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
class="metadata topicon" doesn't seem to do anything for me. I filed phab:T115429 "Use standard addHelpLink() for search help on Special:Search page" so its help link looks the same as, e.g. the help on Special:LinkSearch. -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 01:06, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Protected edit request on 2 November 2015

[edit]

By Wednesday, this page needs to be removed, in accordance with T115429. Kharkiv07 (T) 21:06, 2 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kharkiv07: just trying to understand this. There is only one help link at the moment, so the change has not yet propagated? What is the source of the new link and do we need to add one at the same time as removing this one? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:06, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Could persons acting on this please ensure this page is archived somewhere, rather than deleted outright.  — Scott talk 13:39, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ: See meta:Tech/News/2015/45, I forgot that we get updated on Thursdays, not Wednesdays, but you'll probably just have to remove the content. The change will default the help link to Help:Searching, so we will not need to do anything. Kharkiv07 (T) 13:48, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The edit request is premature so I have deactivated it for now. The default is actually mw:Help:Searching but hopefully there will be a message like MediaWiki:Contributions-helppage to change it to a local page. If not then I think we should keep the link we have. The new link will be at the upper right with an icon like on mw:Special:Search. [1] shows MediaWiki:Search-summary will still be displayed where it is now. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:14, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like we will be able to set a local page Help:Searching at MediaWiki:Search-helppage. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:22, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The feature at T115429 has been enabled. I have created MediaWiki:Search-helppage with Help:Searching and blanked MediaWiki:Search-summary. The MediaWiki default is blank so I don't think it's necessary to delete it. If it's kept then everybody can see the page history, and this talk page doesn't belong to a non-existing page. The message is still displayed above the big search box on search pages so it's possible to add something else. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:57, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
