Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH is a German technology company, based in Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia. The company provides railway signalling systems and payment systems for public transport, parking, and fuel retailers. Scheidt & Bachmann was founded in 1872.[1]

History

Friedrich Scheidt and Carl Bachmann founded Scheidt & Bachmann in Mönchengladbach in 1872,[2] initially manufacturing steam engines and textile manufacturing equipment.[3] In 1875 production expanded to create mechanical signals for railroad systems.[3][4]1896, Scheidt & Badmann was granted its first patent for a "drive device for barriers". The company relocated to a larger facility in Rheydt (now part of Mönchengladbach) in 1914. In 1932, it took advantage of the favourable market situation, and expanded into the manufacture of tank systems and petrol pumps.[4] In 1936 the company was transformed from a general partnership (Offene Handelsgesellschaft or 'oHG') into a public liability company (Aktiengesellschaft or 'AG'). During the Second World War, the main factory was almost completely destroyed prompting reconstructuion efforts after the end of the war.

In the 1950s and 60s, Scheidt & Bachmann AG operated an iron foundry and produced equipment such as tank systems, compressors, gas and petrol pumps, and signaling devices.[5][6] In 1956, the company pursued a licensing agreement with a U.S. firm to manufacture oil burners.[5][7] During this period, a significant portion of its products was sold to the German Federal Railway and various international oil companies.[5][7]

In 1963, Scheidt & Bachmann AG changed its legal status from a public limited company to a limited liability company (GmbH). By 1966, the company began designing and producing systems for multi-storey car parks, launching its parking management division and incorporating emerging microprocessor technology. Around the same time, Scheidt & Bachmann developed parking fee-collection systems featuring barriers at parking lot entrances, where users could obtain magnetic tickets or use credit cards to enter and pay at self-service or staffed cashier stations, with fees calculated upon exit.[4] In 1970, the company expanded this concept to include fare collection systems for public transportation. The business was further expanded in 1974 to include systems for leisure centres, followed by the establishment of a fare collection systems division in 1978.[1][4] In 1990 the company acquired Verkehrselektronik GmbH, which became the first wholly owned subsidiary.[3]

In 2008, Scheidt & Bachmann ticket machines on the Long Island Rail Road and the Metro-North Railroad in the New York metropolitan area were highlighted in the media after US$800,000 worth of tickets were dispensed for free and fraudulently resold. A glitch in the ticket machines dispensed free tickets when debit card transactions from certain banks were supposed to decline. The glitch had been present since 2001, and was exploited by a group of three people who resold the tickets for over three years.[8][9]

A 2012 audit of the CharlieCard system on the MBTA in Boston, maintained by Scheidt & Bachmann, found a discrepancy of US$101.7 million in fare revenues over five years. The audit also found that ticket machines and fareboxes had been unable to communicate with the MBTA's accounting systems since the CharlieCard system's 2005 installation.[10][11]

In response to changes in digitisation within the parking industry, and advances in technologies such as parking apps, ticketless systems, on October 1, 2019, Scheidt & Bachmann Customer Service GmbH and Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH Region DA-CH merged to form Scheidt & Bachmann Parking Solutions Germany GmbH.[14] The subsidiary is a provider of integrated, modular systems for parking management.[15]

Scheidt & Bachmann Energy Retail Solutions[13] is one of the four divisions of the global Scheidt & Bachmann brand, which has operated for over 150 years in the mobility sector. The Energy Retail Solutions division focuses on developing and implementing system solutions for the energy retail industry.[16]

Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik GmbH

Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik GmbH, based in Kiel, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH in Mönchengladbach. For over 30 years, it has manufactured and supplied operations management systems for mainline and local rail-bound public transport. The company developed a network-wide dispatching and control system, known as Travis, which contributed to its role as a supplier of railway technology in Europe.[17]

Scheidt & Bachmann System Technik also provide training systems, including the BEST Operations and Interlocking Simulation System,[18] to public transportation companies worldwide. Its product portfolio included train identification systems, interlocking systems for depots, marshalling and gravity shunting yards, and the central VDV data pool RIMOS. The company employed approximately 90 staff with expertise in IT and railway technology.[17]

Schenk Systeme AG was founded in Meggen in 1964, with its headquarters relocating to Küssnacht am Rigi in 1998. The family-owned company was majority-owned by Stefan and Claudia Keller until 2023,[21] when Scheidt & Bachmann announced the acquisition of a majority stake in the business.[22] S&B began their relationship with Schenk in 2008, and invested as a minority shareholder in 2009. The investment grew in 2014, as S&B expanded its parking business division throughout Switzerland.[22]

Schenk Systeme business activities encompass the distribution, installation, and maintenance of dispensers and systems for fuel retailers in the Swiss market, as well as the development, installation, and maintenance of head-office and back-office systems.[21]

The company provides 24/7 service throughout the country.[21]

United Kingdom

Registered in July 1999,[24] Scheidt & Bachmann UK Ltd., is an IT Services and IT Consulting company specifically working in the area of parking solutions, fare collection systems, and energy retail.[25][26] Among the services provided, a new prototype vending machine for transport tickets including the ability to print UK tickets on plain paper rather than the orange card tickets are set to undergo real-world trials in July 2024.[27]

Formed in 1995,[28] Scheidt & Bachmann USA market Parking Solutions and Fare Collection Systems in the United States.[29] The company is situated in a 72,000-square-foot office space in Lowell, Massachusetts[30] which is the headquarters for the business.[28] The subsidiary areas of business include account-based ticketing platforms, fare collections devices, data management, end-to-end IT, software and hardware,[30] project management, field service, software support, and spare parts repair for these product lines.[31] The facility also has a full-service manufacturing floor, certified under ISO 9001-2015 standards, for producing Fare Collection hardware.[31]

To address the geographically broad US market and maintain client relationships, Scheidt & Bachmann USA operate local service and sales offices in Baltimore, Maryland; Miami, Florida; Houston, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Hayward, California.[31]

Dubai

The company is based in Dubai[33] to maintain proximity to clients and partners in the Middle East.[34] The subsidiary combines parking solutions developed by the German manufacturer with local market knowledge.[34] It offers tailored developments and in-house services to meet regional demand.[35][34]
