Sidonie in Japan (French: Sidonie au Japon) is a 2023 romantic drama film co-written and directed by Élise Girard and starring Isabelle Huppert. It premiered at the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival.

Production
[edit]Girard drew inspiration for the film from her first trip to Japan that she made to promote her 2011 film Belleville-Tokyo.[2] The film is a co-production between France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan.[2] It is one of the last works of co-writer Sophie Fillières, who died two months before its premiere.[2]
Release
[edit]The film premiered at the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival, in the Giornate degli Autori (Venice Days) sidebar.[2][3][4] It was released in French cinemas on 3 April 2024.[5][6]
Reception
[edit]On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 40% of 5 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.2/10.[7]
